Qualcomm expands its PC bet with its new 7nm 8cx platform

Qualcomm wants to become a major player in the PC/laptop market. Now that there is Windows 10 on ARM, that’s more than a pipe dream, but in its earliest iterations, those Qualcomm-based Windows 10 laptops used the Snapdragon 850 system on a chip that was specifically designed for PCs but still very much a direct […]

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx chip for Windows 10 laptops could end Intel’s dominance

TwitterFacebook

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips dominate mobile — you’ll find them in almost every Android phone and tablet — and now they’re ready to invade Intel’s main turf: PCs.

On the third day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, the world’s largest mobile chipmaker unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx system-on-a-chip (SoC). It’s created with a 7-nanometer process, similar to Apple’s A12 and A12X chips, which are in the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR and new iPad Pros.

Qualcomm previously tested the PC waters with the Snapdragon 835 and 850 chips, but now it’s ready for a full assault on Intel’s territory. This could very well be the beginning of the end to Intel’s vice-like grip powering PCs. Read more…

Here’s what 100 mini drones look like flying through the Rockettes holiday show

TwitterFacebook

The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes has taken place every holiday season in New York City since 1933. But this year the always festive finale will look different — and be way more high-tech.

That’s because Intel is bringing in its lightweight Shooting Star Mini drones — the ones that made appearances at the Olympics and the Super Bowl —  for some light-filled, choreographed visions. The final scene is called “Christmas Lights”; it’s all very on theme.

Most notable will be the sheer number of drones: A hundred of them, all synced and moving together to create holiday cheer. The drones hold LED lights that can make 4 billion colorful combinations.  Read more…

Inside VW, Mobileye’s deal to launch a autonomous ride-hailing service in Israel

In the world of autonomous vehicles, the news comes in repetitive short bursts with formulaic precision: Company X is launching a robotaxi fleet/test program in city Y by [insert date]. Apple’s first 5G iPhone will launch a year behind Android rivals, report says

TwitterFacebook

Apple’s first 5G iPhone is still two years away. That’s according to a new report, which says the iPhone maker won’t be 5G ready until 2020.

That would put Apple a year behind some of its Android rivals which have said they plan to have 5G phones in 2019.

The news, which comes from Fast Company, cites a single source said to have “knowledge of Apple’s plans.”

The report also appears to confirm what has long been another point of speculation: which company will supply 5G modems for the iPhone. That company will be Intel and only Intel, according to Fast Company. Read more…

Google’s Home Hub can be bricked with one line of code

Security advocate Jerry Gamblin has posted a set of instructions – essentially basic lines of XML – that can easily pull important information off of the Google Home Hub and, in some cases, temporarily brick the device. The Home Hub, which is essentially an Android tablet attached to a speaker, is designed to act as […]

MIT researchers say memory splitting breakthrough could prevent another Meltdown or Spectre

Virtually every modern computer processor was thrown under the bus earlier this year when researchers found a fundamental design weakness in Intel, AMD and ARM chips, making it possible to steal sensitive data from the computer’s memory. The Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities — which date back to 1995 — punched holes in the walls that […]
