What is it with nipples at the Super Bowl?

During Sunday’s halftime show, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine decided to take his shirt off for the crowd, because something was necessary to liven up the musical equivalent of a jar of mayonnaise. 

The problem? The Super Bowl halftime show has a storied history — with all the pearl clutching over Janet Jackson’s nipple more than a decade ago. Justin Timberlake, who exposed Janet’s nipple in 2004, returned to the Super Bowl last year and fans were quick to slam him. And now it’s Levine’s turn to feel the heat.

Janet Jackson might’ve confirmed she’s not performing at the Super Bowl tonight, but she’s still managing to upstage Justin Timberlake anyway.

Janet-loving Twitter users rebranded Timberlake’s return to the Super Bowl halftime show as #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay. Who can forget his last trip to the Super Bowl, in 2004, when Timberlake was responsible for Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction”?

All these posts highlighting Jackson’s talent sure makes you wish the man in the woods would go back there and let Janet take the stage instead.

The 2004 Super Bowl halftime show’s ‘Nipplegate’ was truly the Watergate of sports broadcasting: Where were you when Justin Timberlake unexpectedly exposed Janet Jackson’s breast to 143.6 million viewers on live television — seemingly, to her utter surprise?

In a new interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, Timberlake addressed the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” known as Nipplegate, in light of his preparations to return to the stage for Super Bowl LII. 

The singer admitted that he “stumbled through” the aftermath of the scandal, vaguely addressing criticisms that he didn’t do enough to defend Jackson from the disproportionate backlash she received. Read more…
