The 10 best gifts for new and old ‘Doctor Who’ fans

TwitterFacebook

Doctor Who fans are especially hard to shop for.

Like many franchises, Doctor Who has a plethora of official and unofficial material that directly relates to the show — Blu-rays, comics, books, audio adventures, and more — but in the case of Doctor Who, there’s just so much of it. The show has had 55 years to build itself, which is wondrous, but as a gift-giver, you can pretty much toss all of that out since you never know what they already have.

However, Who also has an advantage: The show renews itself every few years, creating a ton more new merchandise in the process. And this past year has been a doozy, with Jodie Whittaker taking over as the Doctor, the first woman in the title role. That means a lot more interest, and plenty of new merchandise. Read more…

‘Doctor Who’ pulls a ‘Game of Thrones’, makes fans wait for the next season

No, Doctor Who is not going to suddenly start killing everybody off (at least that we know of)
But it does look like the show is going to pull a Game of Thrones of sorts in terms of how long it will be between seasons.

Jodie Whittaker will be returning for another season of ‘Doctor Who’

TwitterFacebook

God is a woman and so is The Doctor for one more season, at least.

Jodie Whittaker, who’s currently playing The Doctor in Season 11 of Doctor Who, just confirmed that she will be returning to her role of extraterrestrial Time Lord in the legendary BBC sci-fi series for Season 12.

Whittaker told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s definitely not ready to hand over the Doctor Who-baton to another actor just yet.

“It’s such an incredible role,” Whittaker told THR. “It’s been an extraordinary journey so far and I’m not quite ready to hand it over yet.”  Read more…

On Sunday evening, over eight million people in the UK tuned in to watch Jodie Whittaker’s first outing as the new Doctor.

And judging by the reaction on Twitter, everyone seemed to love it.

Here are some of the many excitable reactions from viewers of Doctor Who‘s series 11 premiere, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth”:

That was fantastic#doctorwho

After months and months of “the Doctor should only be a man” rubbish from naysayers – their incessant moaning and negativity was instantly proven to be irrelevant nonsense. Jodie nailed the character within seconds.

She IS the Doctor. 100% 🙌

‘Doctor Who’ history made: Jodie Whittaker aces American debut

TwitterFacebook

Finally, a world of Doctor Who fans has seen the result of a very brave and controversial decision, unprecedented in the show’s 55-year history.

That’s right: in Sunday’s episode, for the first time ever, most characters on the show — including the lead — speak with broad Yorkshire accents.

Luckily, that trail was blazed by Game of Thrones, so hopefully most American audiences can understand what the hell this Sheffield crew is talking about.

Oh yes, and Jodie Whittaker just happens to be the first woman to play the Doctor. But judging by a packed house of fans at Madison Square Garden, where Whittaker and incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall watched and discussed her first episode live with New York Comic Con attendees, that part was not controversial in the slightest.  Read more…

Jodie Whittaker’s ‘Doctor Who’ interview contains spectacular subtitle error

TwitterFacebook

Subtitles, whether they come from a machine or a fast-typing human, can often be an accident waiting to happen.

Jodie Whittaker’s recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert provides glorious proof of this.

Her response to Colbert’s question about where she’s from, for instance, was: “I am from Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire.”

Here’s how that sentence appeared in the subtitles, though:

A valiant attempt by the American subtitler.pic.twitter.com/EiVJOcvV0U

Oh dear.

It isn’t 100% clear whether those subtitles were written by a human or generated by an algorithm, but either way the result is pretty spectacular. Read more…

Even the Doctor is surprised to find out she’s a woman in new ‘Doctor Who’ clip

TwitterFacebook

This first look at Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor on Doctor Who shows a typically scrambled post-regeneration Doctor — with a catch. The Doctor doesn’t know she’s a woman yet. To be fair, she seems to take the news in stride and is more interested in meeting her new buddies Ryan and Yaz.

Still not ginger though.  Read more…

‘Doctor Who’ showrunner insisted new Doctor be a woman

TwitterFacebook

When Doctor Who returns on Oct. 7, Jodie Whittaker will make her debut as the eponymous Time Lord. It’s the first time a woman will have that role, and — as we now know — that’s entirely by design.

“We knew in our gut it was about time, and it felt like the right decision, and the character is non-gender specific in any way, really,” executive producer Matt Strevens told Digital Spy in a recent interview.

“If ever there was a character that was never defined by gender, it’s the Doctor. The Doctor is gender fluid in that sense.”  Read more…
