Too often, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is seen as a day off — and little else.

Aside from grade school lessons painting a vague picture of King’s life and activism, the majority of us, especially white people, remain detached from his impact. King is a historical name we’ve learned to recognize, coupled with bits and pieces of facts from a whitewashed history. But truly appreciating his work is hardly on the radar — even on a day made to honor him.

It’s an uncomfortable reality of how we’ve been taught to value (or, rather, not value) one of the most influential black leaders in history. It’s all merely surface; a story we don’t see as extending beyond the crisp pages of an elementary textbook. Read more…

50 years later, MLK’s Poor People’s Campaign is back — and more needed than ever

Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s death, and most politicians have chosen to commemorate his legacy by tweeting out some choice quotes — and then leaving it at that.

At the time of his death, however, Reverend King was doing more than crafting inspirational phrases. He was laying the groundwork for his Poor People’s Campaign, a intersectional movement dedicated to eliminating poverty in America, the richest nation on earth.

As part of the campaign, King helped to organize a 3,000 person protest camp on the Washington mall for six weeks. After King’s death, the movement tragically lost most of its momentum. Fifty years later, Reverend Dr. William Barber II and Reverend Dr. Liz Theoharis have resurrected his movement, with chapters in 40 states, all of them guided by the same mission: challenging the country’s “distorted morality” and replacing it with something just. Twitter’s team has asked celebrities, influencers, and its everyday users, “How has Martin Luther King Jr. inspired you?” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his passing.

Starting Monday, Twitter retweeted those answers from the account of Twitter’s black employee resource group @blackbirds and created the hashtag #ThankYouMLK50 with an accompanying emoji.

One man, countless lives changed.

Newsweek tweets scarily tone-deaf photo of MLK Jr. in a casket

The next time you’re thinking of tweeting a photo of a Civil Rights legend in a casket, just, uh … don’t.

Earlier today, the Newsweek twitter account shared a photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his casket with the caption, “Have you seen my brother Martin?” The tweet was promptly deleted, but not before it caught the attention and ire of Twitter.

Bernice King, the youngest daughter of MLK Jr., also took notice of the strange tweet.
