MoviePass’ owner lost a lot of money last quarter, and it’s also getting sued

TwitterFacebook

MoviePass’ recent struggles are no secret, but things just got even worse.

The movie subscription service’s parent company Helios & Matheson Analytics Incfiled its quarterly earning report, revealing it ran up an operating loss of $126.6 million in the three months ending Jun. 30.

The loss is well up from the $2.74 million deficit racked up by the company the same time last year. Helios & Matheson said that without additional funding, it “will not have sufficient funds to meet its obligations” by Aug. 14, 2019.

To add more headaches, one shareholder has filed a class action lawsuit in the Southern District court of New York against Helios & Matheson, plus its CEO Ted Farnsworth and CFO Stuart Benson, for being misled about the company’s business and prospects. Read more…

MoviePass says those cancellation bugs have been fixed

MoviePass is about to roll out its new subscription plan, which will keep prices at $9.95 while imposing a new limit of three movies per month. But it seems that the transition hasn’t been going entirely smoothly. The Verge reports that several users have complained about previously canceling their plans, only to receive emails from […]

MoviePass users cancelling their subscriptions find they can’t actually leave

TwitterFacebook

Tried to cancel your MoviePass subscription? Some users of the movie ticket subscription service are finding they can’t actually leave.

Former MoviePass users are venting their rage on Twitter, after finding their accounts have not been closed as requested, and have instead been reactivated under new plans.

First reported by Business Insider, some complained on Twitter that users who tried to cancel their subscriptions were automatically enrolled in a “new plan,” detailed in a confirmation email.

“Please note: if you had previously requested cancellation prior to opting-in, your opt-in to the new plan will take priority and your account will not be cancelled,” reads one email, apparently sent by the MoviePass team. Read more…

MoviePass keeps plan at $10, but limits subscribers to three movies a month

Troubled theater subscription service MoviePass is rejiggering its subscription plan once again. The company announced via press release that, due to consumer feedback, it won’t be raising the monthly subscription fee to $14.95 a month. Instead, things are staying at $9.95. The baddish news is that the $10 month plan is shifting from unlimited to […]

MoviePass changes again, adds a new limitation to the service

TwitterFacebook

For any remaining MoviePass subscribers out there: Enjoy the one-movie-a-day plan while you can.

Starting on Aug. 15, MoviePass subscribers will be limited to three movies per month under the $9.95 per month plan. If that sounds familiar, it’s because such a plan already existed in the old, pre-implosion version of the service.

Prior to the company running out of money in late July, customers had two subscription plans to choose from: The popular $9.95/month plan that allowed users to check out one movie per day, per month; and the slightly cheaper $7.95/month plan, which limited subscribers to — wait for it — three movies per month. MoviePass’ rescue plan might do more harm than good

TwitterFacebook

It seems like the beginning of the end for MoviePass, the company whose groundbreaking attempt to singlehandedly reinvogorate the movie exhibition business has all but gone down in flames.

On Tuesday, MoviePass announced it would be increasing its monthly unlimited price to $14.95/month and also limiting access to many popular movies for their first two weeks in theaters. This move might save the company, but it’s shortsighted. Independent film stands to gain a lot from MoviePass subscribers, but without major first-run blockbusters to bring them in, subscribers might drop the plan all together – and miss out on some truly amazing films.  Read more…

Sorry guys, even Elon Musk can’t fix MoviePass…

Well, Elon Musk sure had a good run at fixing the world’s pressing problems. Stuff like climate change — with those fancy electric sports cars, built in a fancy tent. Or those fancy solar roof tiles. (Fancy rockets aren’t really a ‘fix’ at this point but he’s thinking about the extraterrestrial future of humanity, okay.) There […]
