Nutella promotion sends French shoppers into hair-pulling frenzy

It’s a well-known fact that Nutella is the nectar of the gods. 

But, a supermarket discount on this sweet, chocolatey nectar had French shoppers brawling in the aisles. Indeed, local media even went so far as to describe the scene at one supermarket as a “riot.” 

It was, if you’ll pardon the pun, completely nuts. 

There were fisticuffs in the aisles at Intermarché supermarkets around France after the store offered a 70 percent discount, which brought the price of the hazelnut spread down from €4.50 (£3.93, $5.60) to €1.40 (£1.22, $1.74).  Read more…

Nutella quietly changes its beloved recipe

Sorry, the old Nutella can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh … because it’s slightly different now.

Ferrero has quietly changed the recipe for its beloved hazelnut spread, a move that was first noticed by the Hamburg Consumer Protection Centre, a German consumer group. 

According to a Facebook post from the group, Nutella’s sugar content increased from 55.9 percent to 56.3 percent. The presence of skim milk powder (yum) increased from 7.5 percent to 8.7 percent — likely sacrificing some cocoa in the process. The spread’s fat content, however, decreased from 31.0 percent to 30.9 percent. Read more…
