The ‘Ocean’s 8’ lack of conflict is the most important part of its fantasy

Since its box office–topping release, Ocean’s 8 has delighted some moviegoers and caused others to respond with a not-resounding shrug.

The shruggers point to the film’s lack of conflict as an issue with the story, alluding to the fact that the lady criminals in the movie experience few setbacks in their quest to steal millions of dollars worth of diamonds, and that the setbacks they do encounter are solved easily.

“This movie is boring,” they say, “because there is no tension or concern whether they’ be able to pull off the job.”

After months of building anticipation, Ocean’s 8 finally hit theaters Friday. Yes, it featured the stunning, talented, female-led cast you’ve heard so much about. Glad you noticed.

But Ocean’s 8 is more than the token “female remake” it has been boiled down to. Like many audience members this past weekend, I showed up for the all-star actresses, but stayed for the crime, glamor, comedy, celeb cameos, and general badassery.

What happens when you put eight scene-stealers in a room together?

Well, in the case of Ocean’s 8, they pull off the heist of the century at the star-studded Met Gala.

Sandra Bullock leads the cast as Debbie Ocean, sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney’s character from Ocean’s 11 through 13), with Cate Blanchett as her right-hand woman.

The rest of the gang includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and – last but certainly not least – Rihanna.
