The Willow breast pump eases some of the worst parts of pumping, for a price

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2019 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

If you’re pumping breast milk, what would you pay to not feel quite so much like a literal dairy cow? With the release of a new and improved breast pump, that’s no longer a hypothetical question.

Despite a built-in customer base thanks to insurance coverage from the Affordable Care Act and a lack of paid maternity leave pushing American mothers back in the workplace as fast as possible, meaningful improvements to the breast pump are few and far between.  Read more…

When surprising your kids goes horribly awry

TwitterFacebook

Parents have long surprised their kids with a family vacation.

However, the practice of parents recording their kids’ reactions – and then sharing them online – is a unique phenomenon of the social media age.

In the days after Christmas, you may have seen some of these videos on your social media feeds. In fact, a YouTube search for “surprise trip for kids” yields millions of videos.

But for every excited kid, there’s one who’s crying, screaming or simply perplexed.

As a consumer sociologist, I study how technology provides new ways to meet people’s needs, and how families navigate relationships through social media. Read more…

Dear dads: Have the courage to be vulnerable, especially online

TwitterFacebook

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

On the morning of September 18th, 2016, like many parents, I woke up to the voices of tiny people in my ear yelling, “Get up, Daddy!” I didn’t know what time it was, but there was no way in hell I was getting out of bed yet. It felt like I’d only been asleep for fifteen minutes and my head was throbbing, as if a bunch of Smurfs started a mosh pit in my cranium

I rolled over and ignored my two young daughters. As any kids would do, they decided to increase the intensity by jumping on the bed, nudging me, and tickling my feet. Instead of pretending they weren’t there, I sat up, completely snapped and yelled, “I’m tired! Just leave me alone, OK??”  Read more…

Reclaiming our Mohawk heritage, one app-supplied word at a time

Some nights when I put my four-year-old daughter to bed, after we’ve read through her latest favourite library books, she asks me to teach her some Mohawk words.

Mohawk is the language of my mother, and besides the numbers one through 10 and various farm animals, my children don’t hear any of these words spoken in our house, or their grandparents’ house. So on those nights, I open the Speak Mohawk app on my iPhone.  Read more…

Parents everywhere are trying to find the right balance for screen time with small children, but if you absolutely have to make it through Aunt Edna’s three-course birthday lunch or take part in a grown-up conversation during dinner, sometimes to only thing to do is to hand your phone over.

When you’re giving your child a game to play, you want to be confident that it’s child-safe, age-appropriate content — which is where this list comes in. We’ve hand-picked a selection of iPhone and Android apps that are especially designed to engage and educate younger children.  Read more…

A cheat sheet for researching a video game your kid wants to play

There are a lot of things kids and parents fight over, and video games are often high on the list. Many parents, especially those who don’t play video games themselves, may be reluctant to let kids play games over concerns about safety, violence, or even simple screen time. The good news is that there are plenty of resources to move your family game discussions away from a reflexive “no” and toward a more nuanced articulation of house rules.  Read more…

How to tell if you’re a ‘Lawnmower Parent’ and what to do about it

TwitterFacebook

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

Helicopter Parents have reigned supreme in the media these last few years but they’re being replaced by a hyper-concentrated version of themselves with a new moniker: Lawnmower Parents. If you’ve never heard of lawnmower parents, take a seat now because you’re about to have some strong feelings.

Lawnmowers don’t just hover over their kids to make sure that they are safe, they obliterate any whiff of a struggle for their kids by curating every aspect of their childhoods. These parents tend to do extreme things, such as choose their child’s friends, practice “redshirting” to ensure their child’s early academic ease and success, and even jump into arguments on their child’s behalf to prevent their kid from having hurt feelings.  Read more…

Why you should give kids toys that look like them

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

Now more than ever, it’s particularly evident that children need to be exposed to diversity as young as possible. It’s a topic that can inspire hesitation among a lot of parents, but setting the foundation for inclusivity isn’t as hard as you might think. Interactive play with diverse toys can be a great method to accomplish this.

Diversity – which is often used in tandem with inclusion – in this context refers to having access to toys that represent individuals of a range of races/ethnicities, ability statuses, and genders. There are other aspects of diversity that are more challenging to represent without backstories. For those, books are a wonderful way to introduce aspects of diversity like sexual orientation, financial class, language, neurodiversity, and mental health.  Read more…

If the problems of parenting have got you down, you might seek comfort in knowing the animal kingdom has very similar problems, and you are in good company in the most expansive sense.

As the first father in this country to receive paternity leave more than 45 years ago, my book, The Fun Book of Fatherhood, is a call-to-action to establish gender equality in the workplace and the home, encourage a national discussion on the subject of the family, pass national paid family leave legislation, and be ever mindful of what I call “fast family forward.” But it’s also a fun primer on parenting, using the animal kingdom as a learning tool. Let’s be honest, there are worse places to turn to for advice.   Read more…
