While the Woolsey Fire in southern California, is largely contained (96% as of Monday night) some of the terrifying images from the last several weeks are continuing to trickle out, including the above video of an absolutely incredible rescue.
The footage is harrowing, taken from a helmet cam, as rescuers navigate a helicopter among the wind, smoke, and fire to land safely and rescue three people — and two dogs — on Castro Peak near Malibu.
It also offers up a rare perspective of what it takes to make these rescues, how complicated and dangerous they are and the risks taken by first responders in dire situations — in this case LAFD Air Operations pilots David Nordquist and Joel Smith. Read more…

When 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama saw a toddler dangling from a four-story building, he did what few of us are capable of doing: he scaled from the building and saved him.
On Monday, the French government announced that they’d be awarding Gassama, who is a Malian migrant, with French citizenship. He was told of this reward during a meeting with President Emanuel Macron, where he also received a medal for his heroic efforts.
He’s also apparently been offered a job with the fire service — he’s clearly got what it takes. Video of the event is like something out of a movie you’d never watch because you’d think it too over-the-top to be real. Read more…

Footage of a woman wading into an icy lake to rescue a stranded dog has gone viral.
The dramatic event took place on Trout Lake in Ontario, Canada, on Friday, after a dog wandered out to the middle of the lake before falling through the ice.
Ben West was filming on the edge of the lake at the time, and documented the whole thing on his phone.
