How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding has become all about homelessness

TwitterFacebook

It probably isn’t what the bride and groom had planned for their big day.

But one man’s tweet about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding and homelessness has snowballed into a national debate. And it threatens to play itself out on the very, very international stage of the royal wedding.

So as it stands now, in attendance at the wedding will be 1,200 members of the public and 1,440 others — and potentially thousands of activists hoping to draw attention to the issue of homelessness.

It all started when Simon Dudley, the Conservative councillor for the area that includes Windsor Castle (the venue for said wedding), tweeted that the police should “deal with” rough sleepers in the area ahead of the #RoyalWedding on 19 May. He followed up with tweets and replies saying he believes that some people are “choosing” to beg on the streets and aren’t involuntarily homeless. Read more…

BBC waives the licence fee for street parties watching the royal wedding

TwitterFacebook

Good news for people planning on hosting viewing parties for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding—you won’t have to pay a licence fee to screen it.

The BBC announced it will be waiving its fee for communities screening the wedding live, so people hosting street parties and other events on the day won’t need to worry about buying a licence.

In the UK, premises need to buy a TV licence in order to view or stream TV programmes on any device. But, the BBC sometimes issues a “dispensation” for broadcasts it deems to be “of national importance.” In a statement, Pipa Doubtfire, the BBC’s Head of Revenue Management, said the BBC considers the royal wedding to be such an occasion.  Read more…

Not everyone’s celebrating the royal wedding. Some want the monarchy abolished.

TwitterFacebook

As the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle approaches, you’re bound to see lots of positive, feel-good stories about the royals popping up on your feed. You may like these stories, but statistically you probably feel totally indifferent

But there are some people who would like to see the monarchy — and with it royal clickbait — abolished.

Republic is an anti-monarchist group, with 5,000 paying members and 40,000 supporters. Their mission statement reads: “We want to see the monarchy abolished and the Queen replaced with an elected, democratic head of state.” Read more…

Meghan Markle’s nephew seems a little salty about not being invited to the royal wedding

TwitterFacebook

Important question: would you go on television just to announce you haven’t received an invitation to the royal wedding?

That’s exactly what Meghan Markle’s nephew did. In a painstakingly awkward interview with Good Morning Britain, Meghan’s nephew, Tyler Dooley, and his mom, Tracy, confirmed they were not one of about 600 people to be invited to the service on May 19.

With a not-at-all-bitter tone, Tyler said “who knows” whether they’ll receive invitations. (Sure, maybe they’re just stuck in the mail.) He did make sure to emphasize his love and support for Meghan, just in case, ya know, she’s watching Good Morning Britain with two extra invitations in hand.  Read more…

Kensington Palace revealed photos of the happy couple’s wedding invitations, which “follow many years of Royal tradition.”

But, there’s one detail that is a little bit different.
