If you thought the John Lewis Christmas adverts were emotional, then you’d better brace yourself —  the short film above, made by videographer Phil Beastall in 2014 and shared on Facebook last week, is a real tearjerker.

“It’s a short film about a man counting down the days to Christmas so he can continue his yearly tradition sparked by a tragic moment from the past,” Beastall wrote in the video’s Facebook description. “I hope you enjoy it.”

The two-and-a-half minute film, titled “Love is a Gift”, has since been viewed nearly 9.5 million times.

The movie cost a grand total of £50 ($64), per Sky News. Read more…

Guy Pearce thinks we’re right to be scared by artificial intelligence

TwitterFacebook

It’s almost 11pm in Australia, but Guy Pearce is full of energy. He’s talking about robots.

The star of Memento and L.A. Confidential has just been in a film called Donny the Drone — a post-apocalyptic short in which an initially friendly-looking robot (voiced by Pearce) is given a humanitarian award.

It’s a beautifully-shot, Black Mirror-esque dive into a debate that’s been terrifying Stephen Hawking, the entire tech industry and pretty much everyone who’s ever seen a single sci-fi film: what is going to happen to us if technology keeps advancing at its current, near light-speed rate?

Pearce, it turns out, is just as obsessed as the rest of us. Read more…

If you’ve Instagrammed the Mona Lisa, you might be in this short film

TwitterFacebook

Every year, more than six million people pay Mona Lisa a visit at the Louvre in Paris, and most of them snap a picture or two.

Using strictly photographs found on Instagram, Daniel McKee created a hilarious film that explores the universal obsession we have with documenting our experiences. But don’t feel too guilty if you’ve faced the Mona Lisa and snapped a photo—clearly you’re not alone.

The music accompanying the short video is by Isaac Stern.
