If you’re in the market for a new smartwatch, the first one you’d probably consider is the brand new Apple Watch Series 4. It’s one of the best looking, and it includes an electrocardiographic sensor (ECG) for detailed heart monitoring.

Now, Withings is challenging Apple directly with its new Move ECG smartwatch that also includes a ECG sensor — just like the newest Apple Watch. It also sells for about a quarter of the price at $130.

Unlike the Apple Watch, the Withings Move ECG does not include a touchscreen. It can’t send you push notifications, text messages, or let you control your music from your wrist. So what makes it so special if it can’t do any of those things? Read more…

The Apple Watch Series 4’s transformation from miniature iPhone and fitness tracker to medical device is now complete with the release of the ECG (electrocardiogram) app and irregular heart rhythm notifications.

The two heart-related features were introduced at the revamped smartwatch’s debut in September and are now finally available via a software update.

The ECG app is exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 4 as electrocardiogram readings need the electrodes built into both the heart rate monitor on the backside and within the Digital Crown to create a reading. Read more…

Wear OS watches are getting some much-needed battery saving features

I don’t know about you, but my number one smartwatch-related complaint is battery life — no matter how I use it, my Wear OS watch barely makes it through the day.

Now, Google has an update to its Wear OS wearables platform that addresses this issue.

Wear OS 2.2 or H, as it’s called, comes with a feature that automatically puts the watch in Battery Saver Mode after your battery drops below 10%. In Battery Saver Mode, all the smart features are disabled, but the watch still tells the time.

Furthermore, the watch will now go into “deep sleep” mode after 30 minutes of inactivity. That means you’ll be able to take the watch off for longer periods without having to worry about the battery draining to zero in a matter of hours. Read more…
