Watch Hillary Clinton answer a cute FaceTime call from her grandchildren during an event

TwitterFacebook

Hillary Clinton did something this week that I cannot fathom doing: She answered an unexpected FaceTime call in public.

On Tuesday night, Clinton spoke at a launch event for the political action committee Vote Mama, which fundraises for progressive female candidates with children under the age of 18. Mid-speech, her phone started to ring. But instead of silencing it and turning beet-red, as I would, she picked it up.

“It’s my grandchildren on FaceTime,” she said.

It ended up being a cute moment — Clinton’s grandchildren, Charlotte and Aiden, ended up saying hi to everyone in the room.  Read more…

Apple to compensate teenager who found Group FaceTime eavesdrop bug

Apple has said it will compensate the teenager who first found a security bug in Group FaceTime that allowed users to eavesdrop before a call was picked up. The bug was initially reported to Apple by 14-year-old Grant Thompson and his mother, but the family struggled getting in contact the company before the bug was discovered elsewhere. The […]

Apple releases fix for disastrous group FaceTime bug

TwitterFacebook

Better late than never.

Apple has finally released an update for iOS that fixes a serious bug in group FaceTime which allowed callers to spy on those they were calling — even if the intended recipient never answered. The update, iOS 12.1.4, was made available for download on Feb. 7 and follows shortly on the heels of two Congressional lawmakers publicly demanding answers from Apple CEO Tim Cook about the major privacy screw up.

According to Apple the update is for all iPhones newer than the 5s, the iPad Air and later iPads, as well as the iPod touch 6th generation. It mitigates what the company describes as a “logic issue [that] existed in the handling of Group FaceTime calls.” Read more…

Update to iOS 12.1.4 to re-enable Group FaceTime

That nasty FaceTime bug is now a thing of the past. You can now download and update your iPhone and iPad to re-enable Group FaceTime again. iOS 12.1.4 is a bug fix release and doesn’t contain any new feature other than this one. Shortly after people found out that you could eavesdrop on somebody’s microphone […]

Congress is ‘deeply troubled’ by Apple’s FaceTime bug, and it wants answers

TwitterFacebook

Receiving a stern letter from Congress is never going to be a pleasant experience, but for Tim Cook it might just turn into a nightmare.

The Apple CEO is being called to account for a serious bug in group FaceTime which turned the video-chat feature into a stalker’s dream — allowing practically anyone with an iPhone the ability to see and hear a person on the other end of a ringing call without them ever have picked up. A Feb. 5 letter, addressed to Cook and signed by two members of congress, lays out a series of detailed privacy questions for the company and very much expects them to be answered.  Read more…

Apple fixes FaceTime eavesdrop bug, with software update incoming

Three days after Apple pulled its new Group FaceTime feature offline after users found they could eavesdrop on people before accepting a call, the company says it’s fixed the bug on its end. “We have fixed the Group FaceTime security bug on Apple’s servers and we will issue a software update to re-enable the feature […]

Apple’s FaceTime bug will be investigated by New York’s Attorney General

Earlier this week, a bug was found in FaceTime that could let others listen in to your Apple device’s microphone (or, in specific cases, view video from the camera) without you accepting the FaceTime call. Apple disabled the Group FaceTime feature that enabled this bug server-side, thus preventing its future misuse while they worked on […]

Lawyer sues Apple over FaceTime bug, says it allowed spying on private deposition

TwitterFacebook

That was fast.

A few days after the discovery of a particularly nasty bug in Apple’s FaceTime video chat app — one that allowed for a user to listen and even see the person on the other end of the line before they’ve answered the call — Apple is already getting slammed by lawsuits.

Houston attorney Larry D. Williams II filed a lawsuit on Monday, claiming the bug allowed for someone to eavesdrop on a private deposition he had with a client, Courthouse News reported Tuesday.

According to the lawsuit, Williams did not mis-use the iPhone in any way, and yet the FaceTime bug “allowed for the recording of a private deposition.” Read more…

Apple was warned of the FaceTime bug over a week ago

TwitterFacebook

What exactly did Apple know, and when exactly did Apple know it?

iPhone owners around the country are asking questions today, following news of a disastrous FaceTime bug that let bad actors turn unsuspecting owners’ smartphones into spy devices. The bug, temporarily rendered inoperable by Apple’s late Jan. 28 disabling of group FaceTime altogether, only garnered widespread attention yesterday — but there is evidence that the Cupertino-based company was warned about it as early as Jan. 20, and yet did not alert its customers.

Apple disables group calling in FaceTime in response to eavesdropping bug

Apple has disabled the group calling feature within its FaceTime calling service after it was found to house a nasty bug that allows eavesdropping. Apple’s status page shows that group calling via FaceTime is “temporarily unavailable” — that’s likely a stop-gap move while the company works on a more permanent fix to the problem. We […]
