New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is putting children first

“If you ask me why I’m in politics, my answer will be simple: children,” New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told the audience at Mashable’s 9th annual Social Good Summit on Sept. 23.

On the one-year anniversary of the general election that elevated her to power, Ardern spoke about one of her greatest passions as a politician: helping kids.

“When I came into office, somewhat surprisingly, I did so with the single-minded determination to improve the lives of children in New Zealand,” she said, speaking alongside the executive director of UNICEF, Henrietta Fore.

“As one of our 12 priorities as a government we want to make New Zealand the best place in the world to be a child,” Ardern said. “Not to raise children, but to be a child.” Read more…

6 things Deaf activist Nyle DiMarco wants you to know about sign language

TwitterFacebook

You may know Nyle DiMarco from America’s Next Top Model, where he was crowned the victor of the show’s 22nd season, in 2015. You may have seen DiMarco demonstrate perfect rhythm on Dancing With the Stars, where he went home with yet another grand prize. DiMarco, in short, is a winner.

But DiMarco, who is deaf, believes he owes his good fortune in life to a childhood experience: learning language — both spoken and signed — at an early age. Language acquisition, he says, helped him understand and engage with the world, which led to life-changing educational opportunities.

Now DiMarco is using his fame to try to help millions of deaf children around the world also gain access to language through his eponymous foundation. As part of that work, he will appear at the 2018 Social Good Summit in New York City on Sunday to recognize International Day of Sign Languages and International Week of the Deaf, annual events that highlight the importance of access to sign language as part of achieving full human rights for deaf people.  Read more…

Copeny, also known as “Little Miss Flint,” is an advocate for her hometown of Flint, Michigan, which has been fighting a life-threatening water crisis since 2014. When she was 8 years old, she penned a powerful letter to President Obama on behalf of Flint and its children, who could no longer drink from the tap, shower without their eyes burning, or even safely use a Slip ‘N Slide.

Obama replied to Copeny, visited Flint, and eventually signed off on $100 million in funding to help repair the city’s poisoned water system. But Copeny wasn’t done advocating for change. Read more…

Despite the hate, Amber Heard wants to make the most of her digital soapbox

TwitterFacebook

Once upon a time, Aquaman actor and activist Amber Heard had no social media presence. That fairytale ended last year, when she realized the world was talking about her personal and professional lives and she was missing from the conversation.

“For years and years … I would think constantly, ‘Thank goodness I don’t have to deal with that,'” says Heard. “Only, only because I realized that I was the only one not weighing in on my narrative — when I realized that and seeing how bastardized it had become in the hands of others with prejudice and vested interest in the wrong things … I finally had to step in.”  Read more…
