Twitter commits to taking on the bots and the abusers (yet again)

In a new blog post on Tuesday, Twitter committed to continue dealing with problems that have long plagued the website: spam and harassment.

Since the 2016 election, malicious bot and troll accounts have hounded users across Twitter with fake news and abusive comments. In an effort to combat this issue, the company announced that new users will be required to confirm either an email address or phone number. The company added that there would be exceptions for legitimate users whose safety would be jeopardized without anonymity.  Read more…

Gmail accounts appear to send out spam, and their owners are baffled

Something is not right in the land of Gmail

Numerous account holders woke up Sunday morning to discover a raft of spam emails sitting in their sent folders, and that even after changing their passwords the emails kept going out. At least some of these people, including a Mashable editor, had two-factor authentication enabled on their accounts. 

“My email account has sent out 3 spam emails in the past hour to a list of about 10 addresses that I don’t recongnize,” read an April 21 post to a Google Help Forum. “I changed my password immediately after the first one, but then it happened again 2 more times.” Read more…

‘SEX Club’ spam just took over Strava

For millions of people, the fitness-tracking app Strava is a handy tool for logging runs and sharing exercise data with friends. Strava may also be, it turns out, a great way to join a sex club.

On Wednesday, an untold number of Strava users received unsolicited invitations from someone by the name of Jessy Kiss to a group called “SEX Club.”

“You’re Invited,” reads the message. “Jessy Kiss invited you to join SEX Club. Accept this invitation and you’ll get access to all the club’s discussions, events, group activities, photos and stories — and lots of cool stuff you can’t get anywhere else.” Read more…
