The 5 kinds of sci-fi space travel, ranked by realism

This post is part of Science of Sci-Fi, Mashable’s ongoing series dissecting the science (or lack of science) in our favorite sci-fi movies, TV shows, and books.

Space is big, as Douglas Adams famously wrote in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Like, really big. Alpha Centauri – the nearest star system to our own – is more than 4 light years away. Even within our solar system, massive distances make travel timely and difficult to plan.

With current technology, it would take us a century to reach Alpha Centauri. We don’t have a spaceship that can go faster than the speed of light; the fastest speed we can reach using nuclear power is 4.5 percent of lightspeed. Let’s just say you’re going to need a lot of podcasts for the trip Read more…

Spock is coming to a Star Trek TV show for the first time in 50 years

TwitterFacebook

It’s official: For the first time since 1969, Lieutenant Spock will appear in a new Star Trek TV show.

Spock appears in the second season of Star Trek Discovery, executive producer Alex Kurtzman revealed at San Diego Comic Con.

Is Spock coming? 🖖 “I can tell you that, yes, you will be seeing Spock this season.” -Alex Kurtzman #SDCC2018 #StarTrekDiscovery

— Star Trek: Discovery (@startrekcbs) July 20, 2018

A question mark had hung over Spock’s potential appearance in the show since the end of Season 1. In its final minutes, out of nowhere, the Discovery comes across a distress signal from the USS Enterprise — commanded by Christopher Pike, the predecessor to Captain James T. Kirk. Read more…

The science behind Star Trek technobabble

TwitterFacebook

This post is part of Science of Sci-Fi, Mashable’s ongoing series dissecting the science (or lack of science) in our favorite sci-fi movies, TV shows, and books.

Star Wars is all action. You know, X-wings and lightsabers and fully armed and operational battle stations.

Star Trek — at least, the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager — was less … let’s say, explosive. There were a lot of sensor readings. Also, sensible debates. Several episodes centered around academic conferences.

That’s why I love it. The Star Trek franchise isn’t about being handy with a laser pistol. It’s about the power and promise of science, even if the actual science makes no sense. To that end, the writers perfected the art of technobabble — you know, dialogue that sounds scientific when uttered over a control panel but really doesn’t mean much.  Read more…

The next ‘Star Trek’ movie will be directed by a woman, a series first

The fourth Star Trek movie in the so-called “Abramsverse” timeline will be directed by S.J. Clarkson.
You may remember Clarkson’s name from the early episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders. She helmed the first two episodes of the Netflix miniseries (and…

Someone Photoshopped Mark Zuckerberg as Data from ‘Star Trek’ and it’s incredible

TwitterFacebook

This week on the internet, we’ve collectively ripped Mark Zuckerberg as he attempts to save Facebook from public scrutiny by the U.S. government.

Zuck’s two-day stint testifying in front of Congress this week after the Cambridge Analytica data scandal has overwhelming dominated the tech news cycle. So naturally, there were tons of memes.

While robot Mark Zuckerborg has always been a popular joke among the Zuckmemes community, a common theme that emerged during his testimony Tuesday was that he looked an awful lot like Data from Star Trek. You know, the android.

Mark Zuckerberg’s manner has always reminded me of someone, but I could never quite grasp hold of it

Just now it hit me, watching him testify about datapic.twitter.com/4Zs2eGlsHD

Why ‘Star Trek Discovery’ Season 1 was a cosmic dud

TwitterFacebook

This post contains spoilers for the season finale of Star Trek Discovery — but also points out why you may not want to bother watching it.

From the moment its name was unveiled to a packed Comic-Con crowd at a panel of Starfleet alumni, I was personally rooting for Star Trek: Discovery to succeed.

What we had here, CBS told us, was a true 21st century Trek, fit for the new Golden Age of streaming television. A Trek that could proudly stand alongside Game of Thrones and Black Mirror. Not to mention a Trek that would justify the cost of subscribing to CBS All Access, a channel that otherwise had nothing you couldn’t see on terrestrial TV.  Read more…

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ breathes new life into an old universe

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery, Season 1, episode 10, “Despite Yourself.”
I’ve always skipped past “mirror universe” episodes of Star Trek. To me, they always seemed so cheesy: Oh look, evil Spock has a goatee!
But on Su…
