Stephen Hawking hosted a party for time travelers, but no one came

TwitterFacebook

In 2009, Stephen Hawking ran an experiment that required champagne, balloons, and hors d’oeuvres, to demonstrate that backward time travel probably isn’t possible.

It was a time travelers’ party — but no one showed. And that was the point.

“I have experimental evidence that time travel is not possible,” Hawking told reporters at the Seattle Science Festival in 2012. “I gave a party for time-travelers, but I didn’t send out the invitations until after the party. I sat there a long time, but no one came.”

Stephen Hawking died on Einstein’s birthday because everything in the cosmos is connected

TwitterFacebook

As the world reels from the death of Stephen Hawking, one of the great science minds in all of history, admirers are taking some solace in a few coincidences surrounding Hawking’s birthday and the date of his passing.

It’s long been known that Hawking’s birthday, January 8, 1942, fell on the 300th anniversary of the death of another great science mind, Galileo Galilei.

But the day of his death, in the early hours of March 14, 2018 at his home in Cambridge, England, happened to coincide with the birthday of yet another genius: Albert Einstein, born March 14, 1879.

Stephen Hawking was born January 8, 1942, on the 300th anniversary of Galileo’s death. He died today, March 14th, on the anniversary of Einstein’s birth. Time is circular – no beginning, no end.

Overwhelming influx of donations crashes MND charity website following Stephen Hawking’s death

TwitterFacebook

In the aftermath of Stephen Hawking’s death, the website for the Motor-Neurone Disease (MND) Association has crashed due to an overwhelming influx of donations.

Hawking was diagnosed with MND—a fatal degenerative condition that affects the brain and nerves—in 1963 and was given two years to live by doctors. He battled the condition, which is also known as ALS, for a further 55 years until his death early Wednesday morning.

We’ve had an influx of donations this morning following the death of Professor Stephen Hawking. Our website is currently down. We’re working to get it live as soon as possible.

Thank you all for your support. If you’re trying to donate, you can visit https://t.co/qn203FsnFh #MND

Stephen Hawking’s sense of humour is well-documented.

Following the death of the legendary cosmologist on Wednesday, the Twitter account “Letters of Note” shared a letter he wrote to The Face Magazine in 1995.

NASA’s tribute to Stephen Hawking will make you smile like he did in microgravity

TwitterFacebook

NASA paid tribute to cosmologist Stephen Hawking following his death early Wednesday morning.

NASA shared a video on Twitter that Stephen Hawking recorded for astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Koichi Wakata on the International Space Station in 2014.

Remembering Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist and ambassador of science. His theories unlocked a universe of possibilities that we & the world are exploring. May you keep flying like superman in microgravity, as you said to astronauts on @Space_Station in 2014 pic.twitter.com/FeR4fd2zZ5

Not just a brilliant scientist, Stephen Hawking was a pop culture juggernaut

Stephen Hawking got plenty right about the universe, and that even extended to his thoughts on pop culture.
“The Simpsons is the best thing on American television,” the late astrophysicist said on BBC’s The Culture Show, reflecting on his appearance …
