How ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ revived our cold, dead hearts

TwitterFacebook

I need to start with a confession: I’ve never liked rom-coms. Like, not even once.

And that comes with a second confession: My distaste for rom-coms goes hand-in-hand with my acceptance that I’ll die alone because love is a trap designed to imprison me in a false sense of security, unrealistic expectations, and societal ideals concocted by Hollywood, Hallmark, and Big Wedding trying to trick me into believing their lies.

But here’s the confession that’s much harder to admit — the confession I wrote down in a love letter of frenzied emotions that threaten to overwhelm me, then put away in a teal fabric box with a bow: That’s all a big fat lie. Read more…

6 sexy movie and TV moments that aren’t sex

TwitterFacebook

It’s Summer Lovin’ Week here at Mashable, which means things are getting steamy. In honor of the release of Crazy Rich Asians, we’re celebrating onscreen love and romance, looking at everything from our favorite fictional couples to how Hollywood’s love stories are evolving. Think of it as our love letter to, well, love.

Sometimes movie sex is kind of sexy! Sometimes it is not. It’s kind of a toss-up. What’s fascinating is that in movies where romance is the air, there are moments between romantic couples that read as very, very sexy…but they have nothing to do with sex. These longing looks, glancing touches, and sweet gestures are the things that real relationships are often build up, and it would be remiss to celebrate Summer Lovin’ Week without listing a few of those magic moments that are so, so sexy…and yet entirely divorced from the bedroom.  Read more…

In hindsight, Zosia and I were never meant to be.

We met one night at a friend’s party and had one of those mutual lightning crash moments. Instant connection. I liked her free spirit and her nerdy librarian vibe, and she was drawn to my long, blonde hair and my laugh.

Spoilers ahead for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, though if you’ve ever seen a romcom before, you can probably guess how it ends.

There’s a lot to be said for watching a romcom in theaters. The picture is better. The sound is clearer. There are fewer distractions, give or take a noisy kid, but it’s also a communal activity. Read more…

Netflix isn’t trying to make you love romcoms again – because it knows you never stopped

There was a weekend, back in June, when my Twitter feed suddenly lit up with praise for some buzzy new movie. Which wouldn’t be that odd the thick of the summer movie season – except that the film in question wasn’t just another nine-figure blockbuster sequel du jour.

Instead, it was Set It Up, a low-key charmer starring two attractive young people that most viewers will only kind of recognize (Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell).  Read more…

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is an appealingly fluffy romcom with a surprisingly solid core

Crazy Rich Asians is exactly what it says on the box: a deeply romantic comedy about the crazy, rich, and Asian, and all the eye-popping displays of wealth and sugar-sweet declarations of love that that should entail.

But what makes Crazy Rich Asians special – what makes it more than an extremely convincing advertisement for luxury tourism in Singapore – is the smart and deeply felt culture-clash story at its core. Read more…

Warning: This article contains images and videos that may not be safe for work.

In the earliest, most technologically limited days of video games, developers concocted the simplest of designs, leading to some extremely efficient, iconic creations. There were the balls and paddles of Pong, the spaceships of Space Invaders, the asteroids of Asteroids, all of which conveyed so much with so little. Read more…

Before I saw The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I’d had a movie crush or two. Bernard the Elf from The Santa Clause held my interest for a few weeks around each holiday season, Rufio from Hook was a minor childhood obsession, and I was not immune to the goofy charms of Kel Mitchell on All ThatRead more…

Friends, I’m troubled by the state of rom-coms involving our four-legged furballs.

I saw Dog Days this weekend, the new Love Actually-esque summer comedy in which multiple standalone plot threads converge here and there but never — by design — form into a cohesive, singular story. Instead you get these slices of life populated by an ensemble of one-note characters. Read more…

TV and movies are full of good-looking dudes who follow their scripts to woo, lose, and more than likely woo again the men and women whom they love. Many of these love stories are so famous that they’re seen as templates for IRL love — but would any of our fictional romantic heroes hold up to life in the real world? Read more…
