Walmart plans to pilot test the new Tesla Semi

Walmart says that it intends to be among the first companies to pilot Tesla’s new all-electric Semi heavy-duty truck. The retailer told CNBC that it’s “excited to be among the first” to test the new vehicle, and to see how it might help them achieve “long-term sustainability goals” including decreasing their overall emissions footprint. The retailer will… Read More

Tesla’s new ‘Megachargers’ will give its Semis power for 400 miles in 30 minutes

TwitterFacebook

Tesla’s new Semi trucks are slated to boast a range of up to 500 miles per charge — but powering up those batteries will still be important to the truckers who have to drive long routes.

The automaker will introduce an entirely new kind of charging station for its new big rigs: Megachargers. The units will be even more powerful than the Supercharger network Tesla already offers for its cars.

Like the Supercharger network, the Megachargers will be built around the world to support the fleet, as Musk claimed truckers will be able to “travel anywhere in the world via the Megachargers.” Read more…

Tesla Semi has the technical capability to convoy today

Tesla founder Elon Musk revealed at the Tesla Semi unveil that the truck can work in a convoy mode, with a three-truck convoy beating not only traditional diesel trucking, but also rail transport in terms of a cost per mile price. It can do $0.85 per mile, with diesel only able to do around $1.25 per mile at today’s gas prices. Convoying involves using a lead car to provide guidance… Read More

Elon Musk says Tesla Semi trucks are BAMFs

TwitterFacebook

Elon Musk says Tesla’s new Semi trucks are BAMFs.

Yes, for those of you at home, that’s the widely known acronym for “Bad Ass Mother F***er.”

Musk playfully threw out the acronym as a “scientific term” Tesla’s development team used as they designed the new big rigs. The name sounds ridiculous — but the specs, if they wind up being legit, are actually pretty impressive.

Musk claims the Semi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds, well faster than traditional diesel trucks. That’s the cab by itself or with an empty trailer loaded on. Read more…

The Tesla Semi tackles this classic truck safety problem using tech

Tesla’s Semi is an all-electric semi truck, which itself is a major feat, but its powertrain isn’t the only technological innovation that the automaker is applying to trucking. One other key element of the new Semi is that it will automatically avoid one of the most notorious, and dangerous potential safety issues faced by big rigs with trailers: jackknifing.
Even the name is… Read More

Here’s what it’s like to sit in the new Tesla Semi

Tesla’s truck is a departure from more traditional diesel powered equivalents in a number of ways, but it might be most starkly different when it comes to the cabin. I got the chance to spend some time in and around the Tesla Semi, and it’s going to offer up a dramatically different experience for drivers once they get the chance to hit the road. The truck cab itself is obviously… Read More

Tesla Semi truck launch: What to expect and why it matters

TwitterFacebook

Elon Musk is a man with a plan and, yes, a giant semi-truck fits right inside it.

The all-electric cargo mover, which Musk will unveil publicly for the first time on Thursday, fits neatly between the affordable all-electric Tesla Model 3 Musk is currently struggling to produce in volume and ride-sharing on steroids.

Unlike the other electric vehicles Tesla and Musk have put on the road thus far, the Tesla Semi truck is not for you. Well, maybe it is for you if you know how to work a CB radio and can handle an 18-wheeler.

No, the Tesla Semi is Musk’s first commercial all-electric vehicle, and the difference in sheer size, purpose, and target market raises many important and, admittedly, fascinating questions. Read more…
