Dan Gilroy, the visionary creator behind the 2014 thriller Nightcrawler, has once again teamed up with stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo — this time for a terrifying take on the world of modern art in Netflix’s Velvet Buzzsaw. Aptly marketed as a satirical thriller, Gilroy’s deliriously and devilishly fun romp isn’t breaking much new ground for the genre, but it does manage to uncover the rarely enjoyed holy grail of scary movie experiences: the laugh scream. Hereditary is the kind of film you need to sit with.

It’s not just that it has a lot of shocking twists, though it does, or that the scares linger in your psyche, though they do. It’s also that Hereditary is dense with details that only reveal themselves upon closer examination and careful thought… or at least a deep dive into an explainer like this one.

1. Yes, King Paimon is real

And people really do worship him.

To be clear, Paimon is “real” in the sense that he was not invented by writer-director Ari Aster for this film. Whether you think he’s actually, literally real depends on whether you believe demons and spirits are real. For what it’s worth, mentions of Paimon go back centuries – he’s even included in the 17th century grimoire Lesser Key of Solomon.  Read more…

Once in a blue moon, a horror film comes along that you cannot shake — that sinks its claws deeper into your flesh if you try. 

Hereditary is one of them, leaving you with images that refuse to stay buried, and a general sense of hysteria usually reserved for family gatherings.

Watching Hereditary feels like a possession, or the existential realization that you’re becoming your mother. It inhabits you, hijacking your senses from the very first shot and maintaining that hold in every minute that follows. Most horror gives viewers the comfort of voyeuristic distance, but not this one. An unrelenting descent into trauma, it insists that you become part of the family as the tragic terror unfolds. The ‘Hereditary’ heart rate challenge proves no one is ready for this horror movie

People are losing their shit over Hereditary — and we mean that almost literally.

We knew we were in for a ride after the jaded film critics of Sundance called the A24 film the “most traumatically terrifying horror movie in ages.” Now, people are even asking “can a movie be too scay?” 

As horror lovers, we say never to that question. But A24 is known for bringing some of the most riveting and unique horror in recent memory to the screen, like 2016’s much-adored The Witch.

So they tested this hypothesis on Hereditary by tracking the heart rates of 20 participants during a promotional screening of the movie at LA’s Alamo Drafthouse. No one fainted or died, so The Exorcist has it beat there. But the results (graphed above) suggest that you may want to call your doctor as well as a therapist after watching Hereditary, which release this Friday June 8. Read more…
