Uber rides can go a lot of different ways. George the Uber driver is giving you options.

George Ure is quickly becoming the internet’s favorite Uber driver. Ure, in an attempt to make his passengers laugh, The Seattle-based driver made a menu of “ride types.” The now-viral list consists of The Stand Up, The Silent Ride, The Therapy Ride, The Creepy Ride, and The Rude Ride. Each ride offers a different experience for the rider.

Every Uber should have a menu, honestly.

During some downtime after a busy week, Ure printed 20 menus to hand out during his rides. Originally, Ure had been asking riders what kind of ride they wanted to have — a stand up ride where he tells jokes or a silent ride where he remains quiet — and decided to make something that people could read themselves.  Read more…

Uber drivers can get unemployment benefits, rules New York State

TwitterFacebook

Uber drivers just won a major legal battle against their employer.

Following a huge win last year when the New York Department of Labor ruled all ride-sharing drivers are considered employees, the Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board last week decided that they could begin filing for unemployment benefits.

This is a massive victory for gig economy drivers — it means that those who quit driving due to low pay or because they were removed from working for the company (due to violations, deactivation, etcetera), can now file for unemployment insurance.

The system would use a series of smartphone interaction measurements to figure out a passenger’s “user state.” The activity it would look at is: “data input accuracy, data input speed, interface interaction behavior, device angle, or walking speed.” It could also possibly take into account data about location, time of day, and other factors. Uber is selling off its auto-leasing business

TwitterFacebook

After confirming the closure of its auto-leasing business, Xchange Leasing, Uber is now reportedly selling it, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The buyer? Car ownership startup Fair.com.

Uber announced in September that it would be shutting down Xchange Leasing, its Delaware-based subsidiary which partners with auto dealerships to offer vehicle leases to U.S. Uber drivers.

The leasing business currently sports a net book value of $400 million made up of over 30,000 vehicles, according to WSJ, but has suffered heavy losses — Uber was reportedly losing $9,000 per car in August. Many of these cars owned by Xchange Leasing have been auctioned off over the last few months. Read more…
