Official emoji debut for disabled folks, service dogs, waffles and more

A gaggle of new emoji have just been approved by the Unicode Consortium, meaning they’ll be standard across any platforms that choose to support them. This batch includes some much-needed representation for people with various disabilities, new animals from guide dogs to otters, food and many more objects.

There’s currently no interracial couple emoji. Tinder wants to change that.

Emoji have evolved faster than any other language in history. But, one thing that’s lagged behind is the ability to represent everyone. 

One community that’s still not represented at all by these tiny glyphs is interracial couples, and Tinder wants to do something about that. 

The dating app has created a Change.org petition urging the Unicode Consortium — the organization in charge of our emoji — to create an emoji that represents interracial couples.

The lobster emoji was anatomically inaccurate so now it’s getting fixed

Lobsters are kind of a big deal to the people of Maine. Which is why they weren’t at all pleased to discover the new lobster emoji was anatomically inaccurate. 

Thankfully, Unicode took instant action and rectified its mistake.

In early February, the U.S. state—famed for its lobsters—celebrated its victory in securing a lobster emoji. In September 2017, Sen. Angus King of Maine penned a letter to the Unicode Consortium, urging it to release a lobster emoji. 

Great news for Maine – we’re getting a lobster emoji!!! Thanks to @unicode for recognizing the impact of this critical crustacean, in Maine and across the country
