Airlines in Australia face increasing pressure over refugees

TwitterFacebook

Activists are condemning Australian airlines for profiting off the deportation of refugees and asylum seekers.

First reported by Fairfax, Qantas and Virgin Australia are in the sights of human rights activists for their role in the country’s immigration system, which multiple bodies within the UN have heavily criticised for failing to uphold international human rights standards.

The UN Human Rights Committee has long condemned Australia’s refugee policy, particularly the management of offshore detention centres on Nauru and (now-closed) Manus Island, where assaults, sexual abuse, child abuse, and squalid living conditions were documented. Read more…

Airlines, ranked by free snacks

TwitterFacebook

Unless you’re a professional masochist, there are very few good things about flying — especially if you’re flying economy or basic economy. The only balm for your in-flight misery is often a single bag of pretzels and a half-can of soda.

And that is why it’s so devastating when the free snack and beverage offerings on your flight are… less than great.

We want you to know what kind of snack situation (snacktuation) you’re getting into when you fly, so we’ve evaluated and ranked each major U.S. airline by its complimentary snack and beverage offerings on domestic/North American flights. (We’re sticking to the options for economy class, because that’s where the snacks really count.) Read more…

I tested the most absurd business class seat, and now I wish I was rich

TwitterFacebook

I am a lifelong economy flier. I am all too familiar with the common man’s grind of air travel: 20 minutes standing in line, trudging through crowded aisles, hoisting heavy bags into tiny compartments, and squeezing past grumpy people into hard, narrow seats.

Recently, however, I got a chance to see how the other half flies — in Qatar Airways‘ Qsuite, the first ever business-class suite to include doors and a double bed. It’s an experience reviewers have called the best business-class seat in the world, from the airline Skytrax has named as the world’s best business-class airline

It comes at a price: A business class flight from JFK to Doha on Qatar Airways could cost as much as $7,000.  Read more…
