Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ teaser is incredibly intense yet shows painfully little

Forget stunning visuals: all you really need to make a very intense trailer is ominous music, shell casing sound effects and some dialogue about house painting.

That may not sound all too intriguing on paper, but the teaser for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman — which is based on Charles Brandt’s novel I Heard You Paint Houses — makes it work.

The cast list — which includes gangster favourites Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel — almost certainly helps too.

Michelle Pfeiffer gets asked baffling sexist question at ‘Scarface’ event

When the Scarface cast and director reunited at 2018’s Tribeca Film Festival, they probably thought a lot about how far Hollywood has come since the 1983 film. And yet, during a Q&A following the film screening, actress Michelle Pfeiffer was asked – you guessed it – about her weight.

Moderator Jesse Kornbluth (father to a daughter, he noted) wanted to know what Pfeiffer weighed in the film and how she thinned down to play Elvira. His question was met with boos from the audience and at least one “Seriously?” uttered aloud. Read more…

HBO’s ‘Paterno’ trailer revisits the Penn State sex abuse scandal

HBO has released the first trailer for Paterno, starring Al Pacino as the disgraced Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

The promo cycles through a lot of the major beats you’ll remember from 2011: Paterno being confronted with the fact that his assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, abused children for years; the public’s growing realization that Paterno had known for years but did nothing; the outcry against the coach as well as the demonstrations in defense of him.

It feels like we’re revisiting the case in a different context now, what with the #MeToo movement in full swing. So much of this feels familiar – not just because we lived through it a few years ago, but also because it echoes similar cases from Hollywood to Olympic-level athletics. Read more…
