DuckDuckGo has a new, unlikely partner in search: Apple. The privacy-focused search engine that promises to never track its users said Tuesday it’s now using data provided by Apple Maps to power its map-based search results. Although DuckDuckGo had provided limited mapping results for a while using data from open-source service OpenStreetMap, it never scaled its […]

Apple Maps is getting a complete redesign
Apple Maps is finally getting the redesign it needs.
In a deep dive with TechCrunch, Apple detailed the lengths it’s gone to over the past few years to rebuild its maps app, which will make its (limited) public debut next week.
According to the report, the new app will be available to iOS 12 beta users in the San Francisco Bay Area next week and will expand to all of Northern California later this year. It’s not clear how long the full global rollout might take.

So what’s going to be different with the new Apple Maps? The short answer is just about everything. Because Apple has spent the last couple years gathering and parsing its own maps data — it’s no longer relying on data from third-party partners — the company now has much more detailed physical information about the world. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the launch of Apple Maps went poorly. After a rough first impression, an apology from the CEO, several years of patching holes with data partnerships and some glimmers of light with long-awaited transit directions and improvements in business, parking and place data, Apple Maps is still not where it […]

Apple finally allows third-party traffic apps in CarPlay
Apple’s driving app that connects your iPhone to your car’s infotainment system, CarPlay, has long frustrated users because it forces you to use Apple Maps.
For iPhone users who use Google Maps or Waze to navigate while driving, this was often a deal-breaker. One of Mashable’s own editors switched to Android just so she could use Waze for her Los Angeles commute in her new car. She’s not alone.
Google Maps on CarPlay is awesome. I use Android Auto for that reason alone.

But at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose on Monday, the new iOS 12 included a small-but-monumental change for a lot of drivers: support for third-party navigation apps. Read more…

Apple has signed a partnership with Ito World to add bike-sharing data in Apple Maps in over 175 cities across 36 countries. The feature is now live and helps you find the nearest station by typing “bike sharing” in the search bar or the name of the service. Once again, Apple chose to integrate an existing data set instead of putting together this data in-house. Ito World has… Read More

Despite what you’ve maybe read, Apple — true story — ain’t perfect. Far from it. Even its fanciest and most expensive phone of all time, the iPhone X, is already getting a decent share of flak from its first buyers (especially those in, uh, inclement weather).
So goes the kinks Apple fans have had to deal with, including non-optimized apps, the really pretentious name, and that pesky camera notch.
But nothing we’ve seen from the iPhone X so far can compare to the major screwups we’ve seen from Apple in the past. From the infamous “bendgate” to the recent iOS 11 keyboard glitch, there have been some relatively impressive fails Apple would probably prefer everyone just forgot about. Read more…
