Everyone thinks the Magic Leap One headset is ugly as sin

TwitterFacebook

Magic Leap‘s first mixed reality headset, the Leap One, is coming in early 2018. It looks pretty damn neat, assuming it delivers on everything it’s promising — and as long as you can get over its weird design.

Reactions to the headset have been split down the middle with some people digging the steampunk-inspired design and others mocking its ugliness.

It’s always difficult to judge a product before we’ve actually had a chance to try it in person, and the Leap One is no different.

Personally, I don’t hate the design, and I’m less concerned about how it might look on my face because I’d probably be using it indoors, protected from public embarrassment and the judgement of my cooler and totally stylish friends. Read more…

Magic Leap’s mixed reality headset is real, and it looks totally steampunk

TwitterFacebook

After years of boasting about its game-changing augmented reality technology, Magic Leap finally revealed its first headset, the Leap One.

Set to ship in early 2018, the Leap One promises to bring your wildest sci-fi dreams to life, letting users do things like layer digital screens and objects on top of the real world. It looks like really kickass stuff, but can we talk about the design of the headset for a second?

Designing attractive headsets, especially ones loaded with as many cameras and sensors necessary for accurate head and body-tracking, is hard.

Just look at all the AR or VR headsets released in the last few years — i.e. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, Microsoft HoloLens, Acer Windows Mixed Reality headset, etc. — and you can easily see a common trend: They’re all kinda bulky and look dorky. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Need another reason to switch to Google’s Pixel 2 phones? How about an augmented reality squad?

Unveiled with all its fall hardware in October, Google has finally launched its anticipated “AR Stickers” feature that lets all Pixel phones (that includes first-gen models) place virtual characters and objects from the likes of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Stranger Things and then snap creative photos and videos with them.

Google’s AR Stickers aren’t a new idea — Snapchat and a bunch of other apps have had augmented reality features for a while — but by incorporating them into the Pixel and Pixel 2’s main camera app, the company has a chance to make its camera more appealing. Read more…

Lifeprint’s ‘Harry Potter’-like moving photos are now big enough to hang up

TwitterFacebook

What if your photos could move, like they do in Harry Potter? With augmented reality they can.

Lifeprint got a head start wowing people with its augmented reality wizardry printer, but the 2×3 photos it spit out left a lot to be desired. People wanted bigger photos — shots they could really see — and now the company’s launching a larger AR printer that prints out 3×4.5 photos.

The new Lifeprinter is physically bigger to accommodate the larger prints, but barely more expensive. It’s priced at $150 (the original costs $130) and is available exclusively from Apple. Read more…
