How three underdog cities are fighting for Amazon HQ2

TwitterFacebook

Chad Emerson, president and CEO of Downtown Huntsville, Inc., knows that the odds are stacked against the city of Huntsville, Alabama being selected as home of Amazon’s proposed second headquarters — but he takes a page from the city’s space race past when explaining why he believes anything is possible.

“The rockets and the rocketeers were all based here and that was called a ‘moon shot,'” Emerson told me. “A lot of people questioned whether it was possible or practical. Here in Huntsville, we didn’t question whether it was possible or practical, we just set to innovate and make it happen.” Read more…

What not to buy this Black Friday

TwitterFacebook

Maybe it’s because consumers are finally more tech-savvy, but Black Friday Deals are finally getting better.

Every year, I peruse the reams of paper fliers that arrive at my home and the scads of online Black Friday deals for the real forehead-slappingly bad deals. You know the offers that are too good to be true or will lead you to eventual gadget dismay if you do buy them as gifts.

There were, on balance, far fewer of them this year. I mean. I saw honest-to-goodness deals on tech toys I’d want to buy. Read more…

Facebook still hasn’t fixed its discriminatory ad problems, despite many promises

Facebook’s been promising to fix discrimination problems with its ads platform ever since a Pro Publica report last fall found that its targeting tools had the potential to violate civil rights laws.

Whoops, a major internet services company just went down

TwitterFacebook

A major player in keeping the internet running smoothly appeared to experience some problems of its own on Tuesday, with reports emerging that Cloudflare went down across parts of the U.S.

You may not be familiar with the name, but you have most certainly run across the work of the company that protects against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and prides itself on making “the Internet Work the Way It Should for Anything Online.”

“Anything,” apparently, failed to include Cloudflare itself on Tuesday — at least for a short period of time.

Facebook briefly hid its ‘delete’ option on posts, and users panicked

TwitterFacebook

Facebook users who maybe posted some, um, interesting things in their formative years have always been able to take comfort in their ability to delete those posts when it comes time for a job interview or two.

But Facebook recently sent users into a panic after it changed its “delete” option on posts for some desktop users.

The change was reported by VentureBeat, who noticed confusion among some people using Facebook on their desktops.

Yo @facebook Why can’t we delete posts anymore? Those of us on our computers want to know?

Google Docs is down and oh man people are freaked

TwitterFacebook

A collective scream was heard across the internet Wednesday, as scores of people were faced with the same shocking truth: Google Docs was down.

Docs, part of a suite of Google products, appeared to experience outages Wednesday afternoon — with Down Detector reporting widespread problems with Google Drive across the U.S.

We reached out to Google for comment, and the company pointed us to a statement on its G Suite page.

“We’re aware of a problem with Google Docs affecting a significant subset of users,” reads the message. “The affected users are unable to access Google Docs. We will provide an update by 11/15/17, 2:30 PM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change.” Read more…
