Original Content podcast: ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ is a frustrating interactive experiment

“Bandersnatch” offers an unusual television experience — but not a very satisfying one. The new “Black Mirror” special follows Stefan Butler as he attempts to turn a science fiction novel (also called “Bandersnatch”) into a Choose Your Own Adventure-style video game. As the story progresses, Stefan gets pulled deeper into the mystery of what happened […]

Season 5 of ‘Black Mirror’ will be delayed because of ‘Bandersnatch’

With its myriad of decisions and endings, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch certainly looked like a hell of a film (or game?) to put together.
So much so that in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Annabel Jones confirmed that Season 5 of the…

Here’s how to play a game from Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch episode

If you’ve gone down the rabbit hole with Netflix’s latest Black Mirror release, there’s (at least) one more easter egg out there. As some intrepid Reddit users discovered, you can actually visit two different versions of fictional software company Tuckersoft’s website and… spoilers ahead. On the regular Tuckersoft site, discovered through a QR code embedded […]

A game from ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ is playable now

If Black Mirror: Bandersnatch wasn’t unsettling or meta enough for you, the show’s team snuck in another layer of gameplay: an actual Tuckersoft Games website. You can peruse the company’s history (which you’ll be familiar with if you watched Bandersnatch) and explore its game titles – all of which reference other Black Mirror episodes.

Perhaps the sneakiest goody on the site is that you can actually play Nohzdyve, the game Colin (Will Poulter) is working on. But there’s a significant catch.

The .tap file containing the game can only be played by downloading a ZS Spectrum Emulator – a program that mimics the OS of a personal computer from the 1980s’ Bandersnatch eraFuse, Qaop, or Speccy are some potential emulators, but they only work on certain computers or operating systems (one of the only Mac-compatible downloads I found wouldn’t open because it was from an unidentified developer). ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ is here and Twitter is flipping its shit

‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ marks the dawn of a new era in television

TwitterFacebook

This is a choose-your-own-adventure review of the brand new choose-your-own-adventure Netflix special, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

You can choose to remain entirely spoiler-free until you experience it for yourself. In which case: this is quite simply a brilliant, groundbreaking piece of interactive television. One that has cracked the code as to how you let the viewer make interesting storytelling choices without spoiling the immersive mood of good drama.

(Important spoiler-free caveat: Netflix hasn’t yet cracked the code of how to show this interactive episode to its best advantage on actual TV boxes, not even the top-of-the-line Apple TV 4K. You’ll probably end up watching on a laptop, tablet or phone. Which is odd, because all you need to play is go left, go right and…OK — things any TV remote can do.)  Read more…

The ‘Black Mirror’ movie trailer looks like a darker, trippier ‘Ready Player One’

TwitterFacebook

Black Mirror is diving into the trend of ’80s nostalgia, but these aren’t the childhood pixel games you remember. This isn’t your mamma’s (or teen boys’) retro trip. It’s more like a journey into madness than the warm comfort of returning to simpler times.

“Bandersnatch,” the first Black Mirror feature film, will tell the story of a programmer creating a video game based on the fantasy novel of an unhinged genius. There are also some drugs involved — but unlike the cocaine popular in the 1984 of the real world, these pills have mind-melting effects.

It also might deliver on the rumors of a create-your-own-adventure style Black Mirror episode that circulated earlier in the year. After all, it’s the perfect setting and story for it. Read more…

Netflix releases a trailer for ‘Bandersnatch,’ the mysterious new episode of ‘Black Mirror’

What the heck is “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch”? It’s probably not just a regular episode of the critically acclaimed science fiction anthology series. Netflix has been pretty cryptic about it, only announcing its existence last week, ahead of a December 28 release. Given the reported 5 hour, 12-minute runtime, “Bandersnatch” may be the choose-your-own-adventure episode that […]

Creepy ‘Black Mirror’ board game ‘Nosedive’ lets you rate your friends

TwitterFacebook

If you’ve ever wanted to feel what it’s like to be in an episode of Black Mirror, now’s your chance.

A Black Mirror-inspired board game called Nosedive was revealed Thursday, taking the existentially frightening Season 3 episode of the same name and turning it into a supposedly fun game to play with your friends and family.

Nosedive, a self-described social game, is based on the 2016 Black Mirror episode “Nosedive,” starring Bryce Dallas Howard, in which people have the ability to give each other star ratings with their phones. These public star ratings determine people’s social status, entry to events, and purchasing option — a take on how classism creates division in society and severely impacts those who are less fortunate.
