Are you arguing with a bot? Here’s how to know.

TwitterFacebook

So, you live and breathe online and couldn’t be happier about it. But maybe, just maybe, your daily digital interactions across the social web aren’t quite as authentic as you thought.

No, this time around it’s not the algorithm’s fault, but rather the result of a different kind of bad actor mucking up the works: bots. The automated scourge has invaded practically every platform you love, and isn’t going anywhere any time soon. But you can fight back.

Despite what basically any quick scan of Twitter or Facebook might suggest, however, the surest way to beat the bots isn’t to argue with them. Rather, it’s to see them for what they are — manufactured fictions designed to manipulate both you and the larger conversation in order to further unknown (and sometimes known) agendas. Read more…

Russian trolls and bots take to Twitter following Florida school shooting

TwitterFacebook

Tragedy struck in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday, and Russian bots weren’t far behind.

As people took to Twitter in search of any scrap of information to emerge out of the school shooting that left 17 dead, they were likely confronted with what has become a troubling online reality: trolls and bots swarming a conversation for reasons unknown.

And according to Alliance for Securing Democracy, a group that claims to track “Russia-linked influence networks on Twitter,” a chunk of said trolls and bots attempting to shape the narrative surrounding the attack had ties to Russia.  Read more…

This bot can tell if your Twitter crush likes you back

TwitterFacebook

Twitter crushes are real and you probably have one.

You can like, RT, and @ your Twitter crush to you heart’s content. But what if they don’t fancy you back? In the words of Whitney Houston—how will you know if they really love you?

Well, someone’s devised a way to play cupid on Twitter so you can finally find out if your crush reciprocates your affections.

Timi Ajiboye, a Nigeria-based developer, is the mastermind behind the Twinder account—a bot to help amorous tweeters find each other.

“Follow me, wait till I follow back, send a DM with the handle of your target. I’ll only notify both of you if they want you too,” reads Twinder’s bio.  Read more…

Twitter updates total of Russia-linked election bots to 50,000

Twitter has provided updated details on its investigation into Russian election interference on its platform in 2016. Its identification of more than 13,000 more Russian-linked bots that made election-related tweets puts the total over 50,000. In addition, about 3,800 (up 1,000 from Twitter’s data in the fall) were associated with the now-notorious Internet Research Agency. Read More

This bot unrolls Twitter threads and turns them into readable blog posts

For as much as its users love to hate on their platform of choice, Twitter occasionally really comes through with a deep dive on a hot topic that provides actual, meaningful insight. Such an event is almost enough to remind us why we all fritter our lives away on there to begin with. Remember when we used to blog? Like, we issued thoughts in sentences and paragraphs instead of a series of… Read More

My favorite Twitter account is a bot

TwitterFacebook

Human Twitter accounts serve their purpose, but I prefer tweets from bots.

Research suggests there are now some 30 million tweeting bots — though this might be a low estimate. Some of these bots provide weather updates, make stock recommendations, or attempt to subvert democracy.

I, however, like bots that aren’t necessarily so useful nor ambitious. I look forward to their musings because their primary directive is to produce creative or absurd content — and I’m not alone.

“I like anything that’s going to inject a little strangeness, beyond the normal strangeness that we have every day now,” Charles Bergquist, the creator of my favorite twitter bot, NewFound Planets, told Mashable. Bergquist is also the director of the public radio program Science FridayRead more…
