Two weeks with a $16,000 Hasselblad kit

For hobbyist photographers like myself, Hasselblad has always been the untouchable luxury brand reserved for high-end professionals. To fill the gap between casual and intended photography, they released the X1D — a compact, mirrorless medium format. Last summer when Stefan Etienne reviewed the newly released camera, I asked to take a picture. After importing the raw file […]

See the new iPhone’s ‘focus pixels’ up close

The new iPhones have excellent cameras, to be sure. But it’s always good to verify Apple’s breathless on-stage claims with first-hand reports. We have our own review of the phones and their photography systems, but teardowns provide the invaluable service of letting you see the biggest changes with your own eyes — augmented, of course, by a high-powered microscope.

Big cameras and big rivalries take center stage at Photokina

Photokina is underway in London and the theme of the show is “large.” Unusually for an industry that is trending towards the compact, the cameras on stage at this show sport big sensors, big lenses, and big price tags. But though they may not be for the average shooter, these cameras are impressive pieces of hardware that hint at things to come for the industry as a whole.

Polaroid’s OneStep+ makes instant photography even more fun with app connectivity

TwitterFacebook

As charming and fun as taking instant photos with an analog camera is, the world is digital now, and if you can’t post your shots to Instagram, they might as well not exist.

That’s why Polaroid Originals (formerly Impossible) has returned with the OneStep+, a new instant camera that mashes last year’s OneStep 2 with Bluetooth and app connectivity.

At $159.99, the new OneStep+ is a little pricier than the $99.99 OneStep 2, but it does come with a bunch of new improvements that are well worth the extra charge. Read more…

Driver safety is ‘all talk’ with this AI real-time road coach

TwitterFacebook

With so much info coming at you while you’re on the road, another device seems like the last thing that would help.

But San Diego-based startup Netradyne wants its Driveri camera to help you drive better by actually monitoring how you drive — and giving you feedback. Using AI to teach its platform how to respond to situations on the road, the company works with fleets and commercial drivers. It tracks driving and behavior in real-time and gives in-the-moment advice for dangerous situations.

Netradyne recently partnered with a nationwide school bus fleet to help train and monitor drivers shuttling very precious cargo. Last month trucking company Halvor Lines put the Driveri in its fleet. In the trial, the camera captured seven times more risky behaviors than other recording devices. And, after using the technology, driver performance improved.   Read more…

Forget Shark Week, it’s Bark Week on Mashable. Join us as we celebrate all the good dogs, which we humans do not deserve.

Ever kissed your faithful pooch goodbye before a long day at the office and wondered what the heck he’s planning on doing all day?

Will he spend hours gazing out the window and mournfully awaiting your return? Maybe he knows how to turn on the television and will finish binging Queer Eye. Or perhaps he’ll take advantage of your absence and do all the things he knows deep down he’s not supposed to — like sniff around your closet or hop up on the table.

If you’re curious about what your furry friends are up to when you’re gone, there’s only one way to find out: Start spying on your pets. Read more…
