This tiny car starter can jump a boat and charge your phone — and it’s only $30

Dead phone batteries and dead car batteries are 21st century nightmares, especially if they happen at the same time. (That sounds like the premise of a horror movie. Pay attention, Hollywood!) And don’t even get us started on this happening when it’s like, 20 degrees out. Talk about road trip anxiety.

Luckily, there’s a portable car jump starter that doubles as a power bank for phone charging — and it’s only $30 with a coupon code. You’re welcome.

The Beatit Tech Portable Car Jump Starter and its crocodile clamps sport a 14000mAh capacity battery with 600 amps of peak current and a 12-volt charger. That’s enough to jump a car, motorcycle, truck, or boat — anything with a 5.5 liter gas engine or 4.0 diesel engine. For folks not familiar with car talk, that’s insane. And with that much power, you’d expect the device to be huge — but it’s small enough to fit in the glovebox. Read more…

Ford moves the dealership online

TwitterFacebook

Ready. Shop. Go.

That’s the name of Ford’s new online car store. The automaker hopes to encourage online shoppers to take a break from Amazon to look at cars.

You’ll be able to buy a Ford online in the Midwest starting on Monday and the plan is to roll it out to all U.S. markets by the end of the year. So far, it’s been tested out in five states, including Ohio.

Chris Thornton, Ford’s retail network experience manager, described the shopping site as an online dealership. “We’ve taken elements from the sales process … and put those online,” he said in a phone call. That means less time at the car lot, though you’ll still have to go to the dealership to fill out some forms and arrange for the car delivery and pick-up. Read more…

Dude hacks his car to play the song ‘Africa’ when he opens his door

TwitterFacebook

If you were forced to hear something every time you opened your car door, you could do worse than Toto’s “Africa” — a pleasant tune that would surely leave you in a good mood for your ride.

Self-described Volvo enthusiast Chris Ng wanted to customize the door chimes on his old Volvo 240. Now, every time he opens his car door and his keys are still in the ignition, an 8-bit version of Toto’s “Africa” plays instead of those annoying bells.

On his Kickstarter page, Ng notes that it took him two days to put the pieces together. He hopes to create a prototype which can be easily installed on other vehicles, so you too can hear some sweet jams instead of an aggravating chime when you open your car door.  Read more…

Get the secret to parallel parking like a pro: A smart license plate with a hidden backup camera

TwitterFacebook

Heads up: All products featured here are selected by Mashable’s commerce team and meet our rigorous standards for awesomeness. If you buy something, Mashable may earn an affiliate commission.

Even if you’re a great driver, you have to admit that parallel parking can be really hard. There’s no way to know for sure how close your back bumper is to the car behind you just by eyeballing it, but what else can you do? Buy a new car with a backup camera? Ask your friend to get out and look? That’s ridiculous, dude.

But that’s exactly what makes the FenSens Smart License Plate so cool. It looks like a normal license plate mount, but it’s secretly a backup sensor that connects right to your smartphone and notifies you when you’re too close to any given object. The sleek black device fits any car, and never draws attention to itself. Read more…

BMW’s new smartphone car key means you better not lose your phone

TwitterFacebook

With your car keys in your smartphone it’ll be harder to misplace your keys — but the pressure is really on to keep track of your phone.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday, BMW showed off a smartphone-enabled car locking and unlocking experience.

BMW’s Digital Key will be available this July for BMW car owners who have a Samsung phone. Through the BMW Connected app, the Digital Key can open your car straight from your phone. Once you’re in the car, placing the phone on a wireless charging pad can even start the engine if you get really fancy.

To alleviate some of the pressure of completely losing access to your car, up to five other people can have a “copy” of your key, also on their Samsung smartphone. (This rollout will be very limited initially.) Read more…

Elon Musk immediately reacts to Model 3 driver’s crash story by adding features

TwitterFacebook

Tesla isn’t like other car makers, and you can say the same about its CEO, Elon Musk.

Namely because Musk seems rather proactive when it comes to customer suggestions, responding to a owner’s Model 3 crash experience on Twitter.

Musk said he’d look to add a software feature allowing a Tesla’s glovebox to open automatically in the case of a crash, and affix a plastic sheet to the car’s central touch screen display.

Adding software feature to open glovebox automatically when car comes to a stop after a crash. Will look at bonding a thin plastic sheet to the front or back of screen.

Elon Musk: Tesla Model 3 production was ‘a deeper level of hell than we expected’

TwitterFacebook

To the dismay of electric-vehicle customers, delivery dates for some customers who ordered Tesla’s Model 3 all-electric sedan have been pushed back — again

Refreshingly, on Tesla’s Q4 earnings call Wednesday, CEO Elon Musk was contrite, and transparent about the cause of the delay.

“While there were challenges associated with Model 3 ramp, we were in a deeper level of hell than we expected,” Musk said. “Still a few levels deeper than we’d like to be, but swiftly exiting, I think.”

Holy cow! Pushed back again, @Tesla?!? pic.twitter.com/g7yN8OViHe
