This year, foster a Christmas tree instead of throwing one away

TwitterFacebook

The weeks after Christmas always involve a brutal massacre — of trees.

New York City is already a hideous, odiferous noxious cesspool of waste. The city is magically even more toxic in the days following December 25. All along along our broken streets you’ll see the bodies of the Christmas dead: Balsam, Douglas Fir, Frasier Fir.

It doesn’t have to be this way. People can make a different choice: they can foster a lil’ Christmas tree and help it grow into a beautiful adult tree.

Fostering a Christmas tree isn’t so different from fostering, say, a pet. But, instead of taking care of some nasty cat you’re responsible for watering a silent plant. What a dream.  Read more…

Half Christmas trees hope to stop your pets and kids from messing with the tree

TwitterFacebook

Concerned that your pet or toddler will destroy your beloved Christmas tree and everything on it? Then perhaps a half Christmas tree is for you?

Two different varieties of half Christmas trees are currently being sold on the UK-based online retailer Argos for £33.33 and £37.50. Each one stands six-feet tall and only contains branches and leaves on the top half of the tree.

Curious as to what they look like? Well, just take a peak at these gangly, fake evergreens.

There’s the lush-ish green option:

So bare.

So bare.

Or, a snowier choice:

Snowy and bare.

Snowy and bare.

The general idea — err hope, is that the lack of bottom branches will keep your pets and small children from destroying your ornaments or ingesting anything dangerous. Plus, you can expect to have more room for presents underneath the half-tree than you would a full tree. Read more…

Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey has issued her order on when to take down the tree

TwitterFacebook

Alas, Christmas is all but done and dusted. But, Mariah Carey isn’t anywhere near ready to bid farewell to her favourite time of the year.

You might recall that Mariah put up her Christmas tree back at the beginning of October. Well, she’s now advocating leaving the damn thing up until July.

Ryan Seacrest—host of Live with Kelly and Ryan—popped a rather divisive question to his followers regarding the protocol for taking down a Christmas tree and its decorations.

When is it appropriate to take down your Christmas tree and decorations? Asking for a friend

RIP: The country’s most tragic Christmas tree has died

TwitterFacebook

Better luck next Christmas, Rhode Island.

The Christmas tree in the rotunda at the Rhode Island statehouse has died, the Associated Press reported Friday. The pine’s demise comes after it lost a shocking number of needles over the last month, which by this week had blanketed the fake snow around its trunk.

It was a sad — and not very Christmas-y — sight to behold.

Despite originally insisting that the deteriorating specimen would not be replaced, officials cut its remains down early this week. Read more…

An airplane drew a Christmas tree on a flight tracker because why not

How far would you go for a Christmas gif?

Airbus A380 — the world’s largest passenger plane — carried out a very festive test flight over Germany on Wednesday, as can be viewed on flight tracker websites.

A spokesperson for Airbus told The Telegraph that this was a regulation test flight, of which there are hundreds every year.

“Thanks to the co-operation of the air traffic controllers (Eurocontrol and DFS), it was possible to fly that Christmas tree flight path,” they said. “It was the idea of test pilots and engineers — an Airbus greeting to all aviation fans during this Christmas period.” Read more…
