Steve Carell ‘SNL’ promo teases his return as a serious actor

TwitterFacebook

Steve Carell fans may be nervous about the actor’s recent turn in serious dramas, but a promo for his Saturday Night Live hosting gig shows that he still has comedy in his blood.

In a teaser for Saturday’s show, Aidy Bryant and Chris Redd ask Carell if he’s still capable of comedy. He assures them that, as a Serious Actor™, he can prepare for any role.

What follows is a classic actorly montage of Carell reading books, talking to a mirror, practicing, pacing, and pulling out pages of notebook paper in frustration as he prepares. When the time comes to hear about his sketch character, Dr. Farts, he’s finally ready. Read more…

Netflix cancels ‘American Vandal’. WTF?

TwitterFacebook

Netflix has canceled the genius true-crime documentary satire American Vandal after two seasons.

American Vandal will not return for a third season,” Netflix said in a statement. “We’re very grateful to the creators, writers, cast and crew for bringing their innovative comedy to Netflix and to the fans and critics who embraced its unique and unconventional humor.”

American Vandal took viewers by surprise with its 2017 premiere, a pitch-perfect imitation of the true-crime genre with completely fictitious characters and potential criminals (it also won a Peabody Award). After the Season 1 mystery of #WhoDrewTheDicks, Season 2 tackled the Turd Burglar with stunning efficacy. Read more…

How ‘Halloween’ uses side-splitting humor to give its victims a pulse

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Major spoilers for the new Halloween lie ahead.

“I’ve got peanut butter on my penis.”

That’s an actual line from the new Halloween—and it is as amazing in context as it is out of context.

The latest addition to the Halloween franchise has been praised for revitalizing the horror of Michael Myers, cleverly throwing back to John Carpenter’s original masterpiece, and giving the franchise’s most infamous victim the conclusion she deserves

One of the lesser discussed assets of 2018’s Halloween (although Mashable’s Angie Han nailed it weeks ago) is the uproariously funny gaggle of prey Michael slays before his final face-off with Laurie Strode. The slasher victims’ deaths aren’t particularly chuckle-worthy, but the short vignettes they star in leading up to Myers’ horrifying appearances are memorably hilarious.  Read more…

Hannah Gadsby’s one-minute of Emmys glory stole the show

TwitterFacebook

What are jokes anyway?

A delight in an often lacklustre Emmys, Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby pretty much stole the show on Monday with her brilliantly dry, but very funny bit while handing out the Outstanding Director for a Drama Series award.

Hosting alone, Gadsby took some time to acknowledge how amazing it was to be there, with her free outfit and everything thanks to the people who didn’t quite get Nanette

Second, @Hannahgadsby‘s bit. So good! pic.twitter.com/osw9Fo8bjI

The Louis C.K. apologists are missing the point

TwitterFacebook

Seemingly from the very first moments of #MeToo, survivors and women were made to answer the same questions, over and over and over again, always asked with an air of accusation.

How long must an accused abuser suffer? What does redemption look like for them? What is the correct punishment? How much time is enough? What does an accused abuser need to do to redeem themselves?

The answers to those questions, which many women gave in abundance, appear to have been irrelevant.

Though it is not our jobs to do the emotional labor of fixing the problems abusers created — though we would rather have focused on what redemption looks like for those who suffered the abuse — we did it anyway. Read more…

I binged all of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s ‘Crashing’ in a day and you should too

About a month ago, I was talking to a friend about TV when she expressed her effusive love for Crashing. I was puzzled, but not unappreciative; I’ve watched both seasons of Pete Holmes’ cute comedy about comedy, and while it’s not something I rewatch…

10 years later, ‘Step Brothers’ remains an iconic (and imperfect) argument against growing up

TwitterFacebook

“I’m fucking miserable. I had to get up at 10 o’clock this morning.”

If that quote rings some bells, you’ve either been going through my texts or have seen the ridiculous comedy Step Brothers.

On July 25, 2008, Step Brothers hit theaters—and thus began its love-it-or-hate-it relationship with audiences. Just as one critic would applaud the comedy for its “irredeemably funny” moments, another would dismiss it as crude, stupid, or pointless

Despite some viewers’ hopes that Step Brothers would be laid to rest in a comedy graveyard, it’s remained a divisive and highly quotable cinematic staple in the ten years since its release. What about this bro comedy earned it its “classic” status? Read more…
