Hannah Gadsby’s one-minute of Emmys glory stole the show

What are jokes anyway?

A delight in an often lacklustre Emmys, Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby pretty much stole the show on Monday with her brilliantly dry, but very funny bit while handing out the Outstanding Director for a Drama Series award.

Hosting alone, Gadsby took some time to acknowledge how amazing it was to be there, with her free outfit and everything thanks to the people who didn’t quite get Nanette

Second, @Hannahgadsby‘s bit. So good! pic.twitter.com/osw9Fo8bjI

Thandie Newton did that, wins Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Emmy

It’s not a stretch to say that Thandie Newton was the best part of Westworld Season 2. In a mess of befuddling plots and flashback shenanigans, her performance as the single-minded, fierce Maeve was the highlight of the show.

Michael Che and Colin Jost try to tackle diversity in sloppy Emmys monologue

TwitterFacebook

Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost took their hosting chops to the Emmys, with an opening monologue that referenced #MeToo, racism, and the current political climate.

You know, light stuff!

Their monologue kicked off the 70th Annual Emmy Awards.

Jost and Che were preceded – and upstaged – by SNL co-stars Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson singing “We Solved It,” a song about how the Emmys solved Hollywood’s representation problem.

Che began the monologue by saying it was an honor to share the night with the “many many talented and creative people in Hollywood who haven’t been caught yet.” Jost added that there was alcohol being served and that the last thing Hollywood needs is people losing their inhibitions at a work functionTrue. 5 things we’d love to see in the 2018 Emmy noms

TwitterFacebook

The past 12 months have been roughly 700 years long, but Thursday’s Primetime Emmy nominations remind us how much has happened in TV in addition to the flaming hell of reality.

Remember Stranger Things? The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Remember Jon Snow’s butt?? ALL OF THAT WAS IN THE PAST YEAR.

With that in mind, we take a moment to reflect on the year in television and our Emmy nomination wish list.

1. Queer Eye domination

NBC taps ‘SNL’ anchors for Emmy Awards

TwitterFacebook

NBC will reportedly turn to Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost to host the 2018 Emmy Awards.

This marks a change from several years of white-male late night hosts (well, a gradual change) and increases likelihood of more SNL cast members joining the telecast (KATE. MCKINNON).

“We’re proud to be the first duo hosting the Emmys since Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce, and somehow that’s a real fact,” the duo told Variety. Wow, how is that a fact?

With so many award shows in the last few years being emceed by late night hosts, Che and Jost are SNL‘s next best thing. They aren’t the most prolific or most tenured cast members (Kenan Thompson has been there 15 years), but as the show’s head writers they have a unique grasp of the intersection of news and entertainment.  Read more…
