Nancy Pelosi’s headbanging granddaughter steals the show at her swearing in

Nancy Pelosi was just re-elected as Speaker of the House today — and nobody’s celebrating harder than her extremely metal granddaughter.

Bella Kaufman, one of Pelosi’s eight grandchildren, was spotted banging her head and generally rejoicing multiple times over Pelosi’s election.

Just look at how she reminded her grandma to vote:

I’m extremely here for the day this kid turns the House into a moshpit and crowdsurfs over Steny Hoyer’s rock of a head. Have you ever been this happy in your life?

The happiest place in the world is now ... D.C.

Facebook’s got 99 problems but Trump’s latest “bias” tweet ain’t one

By any measure Facebook hasn’t had the best of years in 2018. But while toxic problems keep piling up and, well, raining acidly down on the social networking giant — from election interference, to fake accounts, faulty metrics, security flaws, ethics failures, privacy outrages and much more besides — the silver lining of having a core […]

With Congress focused on political bias, Google’s CEO gets off easy

Google may have evaded the first few rounds of grill-a-tech-exec, but its CEO Sundar Pichai wound up in the hot seat on the Hill after all. Pichai appeared today, weathering a three-and-a-half-hour hearing solo with no competitors to offload congressional ire onto. To his credit, Pichai performed very well. Instead of adopting Facebook’s flavor of […]

Google CEO won’t rule out relaunching in China

Members of the House Judiciary committee have today closely questioned Google’s CEO about the company’s intentions in China, following reports this summer it’s planning a controversial return to the market despite local censorship of Internet services. Mountain View pulled its search engine out of China back in 2010, under pressure over censored search results. It also cited cyber […]

TwitterFacebook

Google CEO Sundar Pichai is headed to Washington to testify before Congress.

According to the Washington Post, Pichai’s hearing before the House Judiciary Committee is set for Dec. 5. The topic of the hearing will be Google’s alleged bias against conservatives.

In August, President Donald Trump hurled accusations of bias at Google in a series of tweets. Trump claimed that certain Google search queries like “Trump news” returned results from critical news organizations like CNN rather than conservative-leaning outfits. The issue at hand here — as with other online platforms accused of political favoritism — isn’t bias but rather misunderstanding of how the technology works. Read more…

A digital revolution is reshaping Democratic campaigns

Two weeks before the 2016 election, Bloomberg’s Joshua Green and Sasha Issenberg published a story about Trump’s brash, self-aggrandizing digital team. Democrats treated the story as evidence of the Trump campaign’s utter cluelessness, until he won.

In letter to Congress, Apple sends strongest denial over ‘spy chip’ story

Apple has doubled down on its repudiation of Bloomberg’s report last week that claimed its systems had been compromised by Chinese spies. The blockbuster story cited more than a dozen sources claiming that China installed tiny chips on motherboards built by Supermicro, which companies across the U.S. tech industry — including Amazon and Apple — have […]

Facebook is weaponizing security to erode privacy

At a Senate hearing this week in which US lawmakers quizzed tech giants on how they should go about drawing up comprehensive Federal consumer privacy protection legislation, Apple’s VP of software technology described privacy as a “core value” for the company. “We want your device to know everything about you but we don’t think we should,” Bud […]
