Cynthia Nixon loses NY primary and shares a powerful message to young people on Twitter

Governor Andrew Cuomo won the Democratic nomination for a third term as governor of New York, defeating actress and activist Cynthia Nixon.

Nixon had campaigned hard on issues such as legalisation of marijuana and racial and economic justice. In her series of concession remarks posted in a Twitter thread, she chose to use her space to deliver a powerful message to young women and queer people.

“I’m not discouraged. I’m inspired,” Nixon wrote after her defeat.

While the result tonight wasn’t what we had hoped for, I’m not discouraged. I’m inspired. I hope you are too. We have fundamentally changed the political landscape in this state.

Cynthia Nixon adds $4.20 donation button (for weeeeed.)

There is nothing Twitter progressives love more than  a quality pro-weed troll coming from an older politician.

Take New York Gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, who recently added a $4.20 donation button to her website to express her support for legalized marijuana. Her opponent, Governor Cuomo, has taken the avoidant “let’s do more research” approach.

“We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” Nixon says in the video. “Eighty percent of the New Yorkers who are arrested for marijuana are black or Latino, despite the fact that whites and people of color use marijuana at roughly the same rates.” Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Now that actress Cynthia Nixon is officially running for governor of New York, she’s facing some tough jeers from opponents.

But the Sex And The City star is also rolling with the (low) punches with the ease and swagger of a seasoned pro.

Speaking to the New York Post on Tuesday, former NYC Council speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly gay and a supporter of Gov. Andrew Cuomo (Nixon’s opponent in the Democratic primary) said, “Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor.” Read more…
