Kenya has a waste management problem, especially in the country’s capital of Nairobi. As of 2016, Nairobi was producing around 2,400 tons of waste every day but only 38 percent of that trash was collected and less than 10 percent was recycled. That resulted in the remaining 62 percent being left on illegal dumpsites or getting burned. Read More

The grassroots group that wants to ban plastic straws in Cornwall
One conversation between a surfer and a businesswoman has led to a huge social media campaign to help clean up Britain’s polluted beaches.
Britain is experiencing a worrying rise in the amount of litter, particularly plastic, found on the seabed around its shores.
In 2016 there’s been an average of 358 pieces of litter uncovered per square kilometre of seabed — a rise of 158% compared to the previous year — according to figures from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

After years of promise, we’re going backwards on greenhouse gases.
Global carbon dioxide emissions are expected to rise by 2 percent in 2017, following a flat line between 2014 and 2016.
These results come from researchers at the Global Carbon Project, showing an unexpected increase in emissions from the world’s top carbon emitter, China. It seems complacency from governments is a lot to blame, in missing our climate goals.
“The slowdown in emissions growth from 2014 to 2016 was always a delicate balance, and the likely 2 percent increase in 2017 clearly demonstrates that we can’t take the recent slowdown for granted,” Robbie Andrew, the report’s co-author, said in a statement. Read more…

Major federal climate report rebuts everything Trump administration has said about climate change
Global warming is real. It’s happening because of human activities, and it’s on the cusp of pushing the climate toward tipping points or other “unforeseen consequences” that could reshape the planet as we know it, warns a new federal report released on Friday.
The report, part of the Fourth National Climate Assessment, is mandated by Congress, and has undergone extensive peer review by the National Academy of Sciences, various federal agencies, and the public. It’s the most up-to-date climate science report since the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s last report was issued in 2013, and it paints an increasingly dire picture of where the planet — and the U.S. in particular, is headed. Read more…
