You’ve heard it before: Water is necessary for optimal health. And while we all know by now that not everyone needs to drink eight glasses of water a day, keeping hydrated throughout the day has tons of benefits. But relying on pre-packaged, bottled water to quench your thirst is just not practical, cost-effective, or environmentally friendly. Not to mention those one-time use plastic bottles can contain a chemical known as Bisphenol A (BPA) that can be harmful to your health. (Yuck.) A team of researchers from Britain’s University of Portsmouth and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory made an enzyme that can eat up plastic bottles. McDonald’s is ditching plastic straws in Australia too

Australians, you’ll be sipping your thickshake through a paper straw at McDonald’s pretty soon — plastic straws are out.

One week after Starbucks announced it would phase out plastic straws by 2020, McDonald’s has unveiled similar plans to phase them out in Australia by the same year.

The fast good giant will roll out the ban to its 970 restaurants around the country over the next four years, and the first trials will begin in August 2018.

The full global switch to paper straws will only be taking place in Australia, the UK and Ireland for now, but McDonald’s confirmed testing of alternatives has already begun in Belgium, and will begin later this year in the US, France, Sweden and Norway. Read more…

According to the UK government,”There are over 150 million tonnes of plastic in the world’s oceans and every year one million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals die from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste”.
