A credit to the internet’s shrinking of the globe, social platforms and always-on digital media can shine a constant spotlight on causes, organizations, and communities that otherwise might slip under our attention—and on the broader importance of giving back our time, resources, and money to charity, whomever we choose as their recipients

But the question remains of just how to best help others. In America, do we prefer to give our money or volunteer our time when considering our own charitable efforts? According to a recent Citi study, 55% of people who do not contribute their time to positive social change causes wish they could, and two out of three people who do contribute their time wish it was easier to do so. These pen-pal programs for immigrants in detention are a way to show you care

If you’re an undocumented immigrant stuck in one of America’s more than 1,478 immigration detention centers, your only connection to the country might be the Legal Aid lawyer chosen to represent you in court. That’s if you’re lucky enough to have legal representation, which isn’t a guarantee.

Some of those detained have no one in America waiting for them — forget anyone willing to listen.

That’s why pen pal programs to immigrants stuck in detention — conducted jointly by HIAS and Freedom for Immigrants, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), and multiple other nonprofits spanning the country — have taken off in recent months, advocates told Mashable. It’s no secret that taking time out of your busy life to give back to your community is a good idea — it has even been found to help improve your health. But for some people, giving back is not only second nature but also their life’s work. 

We spoke with four people who are doing amazing things in their local communities across the country to learn more about what they’re doing and why it is so important to them. 

A vision for literacy

As a former elementary school teacher, literacy education has always been important to Kathryn Starke. Now, she works full-time with her company Creative Minds Publications to improve children’s literacy, with a focus in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Her efforts largely involve helping failing schools become fully accredited in reading, but also include hosting writing workshops at local libraries, author visits, and literacy nights at schools to encourage parents to work on reading with their kids at home.  Read more…
