Apple was warned of the FaceTime bug over a week ago

What exactly did Apple know, and when exactly did Apple know it?

iPhone owners around the country are asking questions today, following news of a disastrous FaceTime bug that let bad actors turn unsuspecting owners’ smartphones into spy devices. The bug, temporarily rendered inoperable by Apple’s late Jan. 28 disabling of group FaceTime altogether, only garnered widespread attention yesterday — but there is evidence that the Cupertino-based company was warned about it as early as Jan. 20, and yet did not alert its customers.

Apple disables group calling in FaceTime in response to eavesdropping bug

Apple has disabled the group calling feature within its FaceTime calling service after it was found to house a nasty bug that allows eavesdropping. Apple’s status page shows that group calling via FaceTime is “temporarily unavailable” — that’s likely a stop-gap move while the company works on a more permanent fix to the problem. We […]

Disastrous FaceTime bug lets you spy on person you’re calling

TwitterFacebook

Well this is a serious problem.

A major bug has been discovered in iOS that lets a caller hear and see a person on the other end of a FaceTime call before the call has been answered. That’s right, this massive security screwup means you can take a digital peek into another person’s life — completely without their knowledge.

As 9to5 Mac reports, the bug is simple to exploit. First, you call someone on FaceTime. Next, before they answer, swipe up and add yourself to the call. That’s it. You can hear through the person’s phone, all without them answering the call.

Sorry Apple, I’m still not ready to upgrade my iPhone

Last week, in light of Apple’s revised revenue guidance, my TC colleague Ron Miller made a tongue-in-cheek apology for taking so long to upgrade his old iPhone. He wrote that he had finally bitten the bullet and shelled out to upgrade a more than three-years-old (but still working) iPhone 6 for a shiny new iPhone XR ($750+) […]

Apple’s increasingly tricky international trade-offs

Far from Apple’s troubles in emerging markets and China, the company is attracting the ire of what should really be a core supporter demographic naturally aligned with the pro-privacy stance CEO Tim Cook has made into his public soapbox in recent years — but which is instead crying foul over perceived hypocrisy. The problem for this subset […]

Apple losses trigger a plunge in US markets

Bad news from Apple and signs of slowing international and domestic growth sent stocks tumbling in Thursday trading on all of the major markets. Investors erased some $75 billion in value from Apple alone… an amount known technically as a shit ton of money. But stocks were down broadly based on Apple’s news, with the Nasdaq […]

Citi slashes sales outlook for iPhone XS Max by nearly half

Citi Research has joined a growing list of analysts to lower first-quarter production estimates for Apple’s iPhones amid weakening demand for the smartphones. Citi Research analyst William Yang cut the overall iPhone shipment forecast by 5 million to 45 million for the quarter, reported Reuters. That’s a sting that falls in line with others such […]

If you got a new Amazon Echo device for Christmas and set it up via your iPhone or iPad, you might have a serious problem on your hands.

In the days after Christmas, a fake app for iOS presenting itself as an official Amazon Alexa app climbed the charts on Apple’s App Store. The app, called “Setup for Amazon Alexa,” fooled enough people that it reached No. 60 on the Top Free apps section of the entire App Store. It also made it to the top ten list for Utilities, peaking at No. 6.

Put down your phone if you want to innovate

We are living in an interstitial period. In the early 1980s we entered an era of desktop computing that culminated in the dot-com crash – a financial bubble that we bolstered with Y2K consulting fees and hardware expenditures alongside irrational exuberance over Pets.com . That last interstitial era, an era during which computers got smaller, […]
