Why Best Buy charged so much for the iPhone X

TwitterFacebook

Best Buy was marking some iPhone X pre-orders to $100 over Apple’s price — but no longer.

The electronics retailer announced today that it will no longer allow customers to pre-order the iPhone X unactivated and with upfront payment. Apple aficionados will now have to order the phone tied to a specific carrier, and with an installment plan.

When you purchase an unactivated phone, you’re essentially purchasing a clean slate: a phone that has yet to be associated with a carrier or a data plan. Best Buy claims that there was high customer demand for unactivated phones because people with employer-financed data plans often need their phones approved before they’re activated.  Read more…

The real reason you want an iPhone X

I never planned to get the iPhone.

When the original iPhone went on sale on June 29, 2007, I was rocking a Samsung A900 “Blade” flip phone, the company’s actually-pretty-decent copy of the storied Motorola RAZR phone. I was editor of a tech blog for NBCUniversal at the time, and my reporter, Stewart Wolpin, was at New York City’s flagship Apple Store covering the launch of the so-called “Jesus phone.”

Shortly after the doors opened and he got in, my phone rang.

I finally understand what the iPhone X ‘notch’ is for

TwitterFacebook

I had an epiphany the other day.

I was finalizing my review of LG V30, which would be my third review of a “bezel-less” phone in a row. And as I struggled to find the words to describe the V30’s design, which is so similar to all the other big-screened Android flagships that came out lately, I finally realized that the iPhone X’s “notch” is not only a good design choice — it’s a necessary one.

With the notch, the iPhone X has one extremely important advantage over most other flagship smartphones: It’s different.

Don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like the notch. I’d still prefer the iPhone X without it — the idea of a phone that’s essentially just a screen is so wonderfully futuristic that I’d be the first in line to buy one (I’ll actually be the first in line to buy the iPhone X anyway, but that’s because it’s kinda my job).  Read more…
