Elon Musk wants cave rescuer’s defamation suit dismissed

TwitterFacebook

In a fitting end to a year of questionable tweets, Elon Musk is asking the courts to drop a defamation suit filed against him after insulting a British cave diver on Twitter this summer.

A motion to dismiss the case was filed Wednesday to the U.S. District Court in California’s Central District where Vernon Unsworth, a UK citizen, filed a complaint in September alleging Musk used defamatory language when Musk tweeted Unsworth was a “pedo guy,” then later sent an email to a BuzzFeed reporter accusing the diver of being involved in child sex trafficking. The tweets have since been deleted and Musk publicly apologized — on, you guessed it, Twitter. Read more…

A 69-year-old ‘positivity guru’ wants to legally change his age to 49

TwitterFacebook

“Positivity guru” and occasional DJ Emile Ratelband is 69 years old, but he believes he’s only 49.

Describing himself as a “young god,” Ratelband asked the Dutch courts to legally change his age on Monday to improve his quality of life. He insists that he’s discriminated against by jobs and dating apps because on paper, he’s too old.

Here’s his argument, translated by the Guardian:

As the Cut points out, “luxurious” might be a euphemism — in a translation by CNN, Ratelband says, “When I’m 49 with [this face], then I’m rammed.”

Ratelband insists that he feels 20 years younger than 69, and that he’s even willing to postpone his pension benefits by 20 years. Claiming that trans people are allowed to legally change their documented sex, he believes he should be allowed to change his legal date of birth.  Read more…

How Microsoft helped imprison a man for ‘counterfeiting’ software it gives away for free

In a sickening concession to bad copyright law and Microsoft’s bottom line over basic technical truths and common sense, Eric Lundgren will spend 15 months in prison for selling discs that let people reinstall Windows on licensed machines. A federal appeals court this week upheld the sentence handed down in ignorance by a Florida district judge, for a crime the man never committed.
