Norwegian Air claims record for shortest transatlantic flight, propelled by 200 mph tailwinds

TwitterFacebook

A bunch of lucky passengers may have made aviation history this week on a Norwegian Air Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight from New York to London. The plane rode tailwinds of more than 200 mph on Jan. 15, allowing it to make the trip in just 5 hours and 13 minutes.

According to Norwegian Air, that’s the fastest transatlantic trip ever for a subsonic commercial aircraft.

Those tailwinds — which hit 202 mph, according to Norwegian — propelled the plane to a top speed of 776 mph relative to the ground, also known as its groundspeed. The Dreamliner is the fuel-efficient plane Boeing unveiled in 2007. It boasts more leg room and larger windows than your average commercial jetliner, smart LED lighting, and the use of lightweight composite materials. Read more…

A giant balloon is causing traffic chaos in London

TwitterFacebook

A giant,  unpredictable balloon roaming free in the streets of London? What could possibly go wrong?

The giant inflatable balloon was placed in Oxford Circus in honor of the Lumiere Light art festival in London. The art installation was put in the middle of a busy area, during rush hour, on a very windy day in the city.

Are they remaking The Prisoner at Oxford Circus?? pic.twitter.com/0xedeG4WqO

— Stuart Thomas (@stuartthomas) January 4, 2018

Many Londoners were concerned about the huge balloon because of the harsh winds and how close it was to nearby buses. At one point, the inflatable ball even stopped traffic and brought police to the scene. Read more…

These British grandpas made a grime track and it’s actually super catchy

TwitterFacebook

If someone told you a grime music video made by two British grandfathers was going viral, you’d probably expect it to fall into the “so bad it’s good” category.

But the video above is just plain good.

The track was posted on YouTube about a week ago by Sindhu World — a London corner shop with an arm in music production which has previously been covered by the likes of Vice. On Thursday the music video — which features two men, Pete and Bas, rapping — reached the top page of Reddit’s r/videos sub.

The top comment — “This is way better than I was expecting” — pretty much sums it up. Read more…

Man attempts to slide down tube escalator, instantly regrets life choices

TwitterFacebook

It may have looked cool in Skyfall, but in real life sliding down a London tube escalator is far, far less glamorous.

This was perfectly demonstrated in a Twitter video shared by 23-year-old James Gower on Thursday.

“Top night last night, but this has to be the highlight,” he wrote.

The accompanying video was truly wince-inducing.

Don’t worry though, folks; he’s okay.

Fuuuuuuuck me that blew up 😂😂 for everyone that’s asking, yeh he’s alright. Few cuts and bruises but he’s all good 😂

This graphic PETA ad just got banned from London buses

TwitterFacebook

PETA has a pretty blunt message for Londoners this festive season; one involving graphic images of a pet dog being served for Christmas dinner.

But, that message didn’t quite make it to the public because London Buses refused to run the advert due to concerns over the “offensive” nature of the content.

In a blog post, PETA UK said it was “shameful and confusing” that its campaign was rejected by the transport authority “when Londoners are bombarded with ads selling turkey corpses.”

The advert featured a “glazed and roasted dog’s head on a platter” alongside the words: “If You Wouldn’t Eat Your Dog, Why Eat a Turkey? Start a New Tradition. Go Vegan.”  Read more…

When Transport for London (TfL) announced in September that it was planning to rescind Uber’s licence to operate in the city, a lot of people were shocked. Twitter was ablaze with angry comments, op-eds were published across the country, and an online petition to save the company began to circulate, quickly becoming the fastest growing Change.org petition of the year, as more than a quarter of a million people signed.
