This CGI remake of ‘Lord of the Rings’ featuring a cast of mice is parody perfection

When something’s been adapted as spectacularly as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, any attempt to remake it might seem like a bad idea.
It turns out there are exceptions, though.
Complete with some impressively accurate parody scenes, Mice is a fou…

You never forget your first…big screen crush at the movies

TwitterFacebook

It’s Summer Lovin’ Week here at Mashable, which means things are getting steamy. In honor of the release of Crazy Rich Asians, we’re celebrating onscreen love and romance, looking at everything from our favorite fictional couples to how Hollywood’s love stories are evolving. Think of it as our love letter to, well, love.

Before I saw The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I’d had a movie crush or two. Bernard the Elf from The Santa Clause held my interest for a few weeks around each holiday season, Rufio from Hook was a minor childhood obsession, and I was not immune to the goofy charms of Kel Mitchell on All ThatRead more…

Another Tolkien book, ‘The Fall of Gondolin,’ is coming this year

TwitterFacebook

There’s going to be a new book set in the Lord of the Rings universe – 45 years after the death of creator J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Fall of Gondolin tells one of the earliest stories of Middle-earth, a classic tale of good vs. evil that sets the stage for the rest of the fictional world, The Guardian reported Tuesday. The book, edited by Tolkien’s son Christopher Tolkien, is coming out in August.

The new book is described as “the first real story” of Middle-earth — a preface to The Silmarillion. It focuses on Morgoth, the first Dark Lord and basically an embodiment of evil, who is trying to find and destroy the city of GondolinThe Fall of Gondolin includes the first instances of orcs and balrogs and even has an appearance from the sea god Ulmo along with dragons and elves. Man eats all the food in ‘Lord of the Rings’ in tribute to his late father

TwitterFacebook

Second breakfast. Elevenses. Luncheon. Afternoon tea. Dinner. Supper.

It was all consumed by one dedicated Lord of the Rings fan, who created a themed 14-course menu that mirrors the food eaten by characters in Peter Jackson’s epic film trilogy — and it was all for a very important reason.

UK writer Nate Crowley commemorated one year since his father passed away with a back-to-back marathon of all three films from The Lord of the Rings — paired with a 14-course menu reflecting exactly what was eaten on screen. Read more…

7 new spider species get their names from ‘Game of Thrones’ and other hits

TwitterFacebook

Varys from Game of Thrones. Shelob from Lord of the Rings. And, of course, Charlotte.

They can all be found in caves in Pará, a state in northern Brazil. There, scientists discovered seven new species — and named them all after spiders in pop culture.

No, none of them eat hobbits, or befriend curious piglets. But these six-eyed spiders are still pretty cool. Even though they live in caves, they haven’t lost their pigmentation or all of their eyes. (Most spiders, BTW, have eight eyes.) Some of them were even discovered outside of caves.  Read more…

Amazon is making a Lord of the Rings TV show, but it isn’t a straight adaptation of the greatest fantasy series of all time — it’s a prequel. The show, which already carries a multi-season commitment, will “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.” Read More

Amazon is remaking ‘Lord of the Rings’ as a series because everyone wants their own ‘Game of Thrones’

TwitterFacebook

The rumors are true: Amazon Studios is moving ahead with a small-screen adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy series The Lord of the Rings, despite the fact that Peter Jackson’s film trilogy was pretty much perfect and a remake is wholly unnecessary. (We won’t speak of The Hobbit franchise.)

Amazon has acquired global television rights to the series and given it a multi-season commitment, which will “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring,” according to a company release, implying that the show may weave in aspects of Tolkien’s The Hobbit, since that story involves a number of characters who later reappear in Lord of the RingsRead more…
