Apple’s MacBook Pro refresh puts the focus back on creative pros

New MacBook Pros seemed like a no-brainer for WWDC. Like the rest of the company’s hardware line, however, they were a no-show. Sure, Apple used the opportunity to reaffirm its comment to creative professionals — perhaps most notably in the form of some key macOS updates — but there were no new devices available to […]

The MacBook Pro gets its own official Apple leather sleeve

After years of producing cases for the iPhone and iPad, Apple finally got into the laptop sleeve business late last year. The leather case sported “high-quality European leather with a soft microfiber lining,” along with the obligatory Apple logo and “designed by Apple in California” guarantee. For whatever reason, however, it was a MacBook-only proposition. […]

Apple upgrades the MacBook Pro, but ignores the elephant in the room

TwitterFacebook

Apple just unveiled a new MacBook Pro. And I’ve got some good news and some bad news.

Bad news first: Apple has done practically nothing to address the major concerns about the current MacBook Pro design that debuted in October 2016. There’s still a questionably practical Touch Bar in place of the function row. The laptop still relies solely on four USB-C ports and a headphone jack for connectivity. And the butterfly keyboard — which many consider a step down from the previous “chiclet” design and can often be notoriously inconvenient to repair — is still there (although Apple made it slightly quieter). Apple may be launching a mountain of new hardware in the fall

TwitterFacebook

We know that Apple is likely launching three new iPhones this year, and we know new MacBooks and iPads are probably on their way as well.

But a new report from reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, via 9to5Mac, claims Apple will launch all that — and more — this fall.

The list starts with three new iPhones — a 5.8-inch and a 6.5-inch OLED models, as well as a 6.1-inch LCD model.

Ming-Chi Kuo, 2018 iPhone Pricing:

5.8″ OLED iPhone X $800-$900

This could be Apple’s next iPhone USB-C fast charger

Right now, the cable that comes with a new iPhone does not plug into a new MacBook Pro without a dongle. #donglelife is for real. If this leak is correct, though, that wrong might soon be righted. Photos have surfaced showing what is an engineering prototype of an Apple 18 W USB-C charger, which is […]

Apple will fix busted MacBook ‘butterfly switch’ keyboards for free

TwitterFacebook

Apple is finally taking some responsibility for the troubles assailing some MacBook and MacBook Pro owners with broken keyboards.

The company’s new “keyboard service program” pledges to replace individual keys and — whenever it’s necessary — entire keyboards on certain, more recent MacBook models. Although it’s not outright stated, the move almost certainly stems from troubles Apple has faced over a new keyboard design that was first introduced in 2015.

In its never-ending quest to deliver the thinnest possible laptop, Apple completely redesigned the MacBook keyboard in a 12-inch model that launched in 2015. The larger keys had less travel, and responded to light taps thanks to each key’s fragile “butterfly switches.” Read more…

Grimes is here to actually make you feel good about owning a Mac

TwitterFacebook

Apple has a new ad campaign for the Mac.

Titled “Behind the Mac,” the ads — four in total — show creatives doing wonderful things on their MacBook computers.

The apps feature legally blind photographer Bruce Hall, app developer and entrepreneur Peter Kariuki and musician Grimes, all of which share a story of how their Mac helps them do their magic. The fourth ad is a combination of the three other ads, with many more Mac users shown using their computers in a variety of scenarios.

The campaign doesn’t appear to be designed to bolster the sales of any particular model; in fact, many of the computers seen in the ads are old MacBook models, including a white 2009 MacBook — see below.  Read more…

Think your Mac doesn’t need antivirus software? Actually, it does.

TwitterFacebook

There’s a common misconception that Macs don’t need antivirus software. Unfortunately, that’s far from accurate these days.

Macs are generally more secure than PCs, thanks to a more secure operating system where certain aspects of its software are more locked down and harder to infiltrate by rogue software. Also, fewer people own Macs meaning fewer targets for criminals. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to get a virus on your Mac, or receive a suspicious piece of malware either.

A report from Malwarebytes found that Mac malware has seen an increase of over 270% between 2016 and 2017. That number is likely to rise in 2018 with new threats like OSX.MaMi and Dark Caracal cited in the article as significant ways of disrupting Mac owners. The more Macs are used, the more they’ll be targeted by cyber criminals. And everyone loves the must-have MacBook of the moment, right? Read more…

Add 9 ports to your MacBook with this leather carrying case

TwitterFacebook

Apple, we know you’re into the whole “minimal ports” thing (as evidenced by the headphone dongle, thanks for that), but that minimalism doesn’t just make iPhones more complicated — it’s screwing up MacBooks, too.

We still need some ports to plug necessary accessories into our laptops, but in order to do that, we have to connect a dozen dongles (and tons of other crap). Because having only two charging ports is not awesome. To shepherd us through this ancient way of life, the DockCase Smart MacBook Sleeve Adapter provides a stylish all-in-one solution that never gets in the way of your productivity.  Read more…
