How an anti-Semitic slur made its way onto maps across the internet

TwitterFacebook

Snapchat users were greeted with an alarming change to Snap Maps this morning: New York City had been renamed “Jewtropolis.”

Even worse, social media was filled reports of maps on other websites and services with the same change, including Zillow, The Weather Channel, Citibike, and Streeteasy.

Whatever mapping service that Snapchat, CitiBike, StreetEasy, (perhaps others) use — it seems — is showing New York City as “Jewtropolis” this morningpic.twitter.com/nsVe8goLyo

Couldn’t find a way to report directly to @streeteasy or @zillow or @openstreetmap so here’s a screen shot of a condo located in “Jewtropolis”. Assuming they’ve been hacked. Might want to get on that and fix it#Antisemitic @ADL_National pic.twitter.com/Z36GdrzLo9

Google Earth now lets you measure distances and areas

Only a few years ago, Google Earth was the only practical way to see all of Google’s satellite and 3D imagery. These days, Google Maps pretty much offers all of the mapping features that casual users need, but Google continues to quietly develop Earth and today, the company announced that it is adding a measurement […]

Need artwork on a budget? These cool, customizable maps are perfect.

TwitterFacebook

They say home is where the heart is, but your heart may be somewhere far, far away.

Maybe it’s the quaint country town where your grandparents used to live or that cool European city you explored with friends. Who knows, it could even be your old neighborhood, which you only moved 20 minutes away from but don’t get to visit as much as you’d like. Or it could be Hogwarts (respect).

A company called Grafomap understands the unshakable bond people develop with places near and far, and created a line of customizable maps that will satisfy your wanderlust — without traveling. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

It’s 2018, and there’s one thing on the back of everyone’s minds — nuclear warfare.

If it isn’t, it should beIn January of this year, the doomsday clock moved two minutes closer to midnight because of elevated nuclear warfare riskThe Outrider Foundation decided to take advantage of this uniquely terrifying moment in history and publish an interactive nuclear bomb simulator, allowing users to see how their houses and neighborhoods would be affected if they were hit by a nuclear bomb.

Find out which Easter candy is the most popular — or polarizing — in your state

TwitterFacebook

Is your state yelling the most about Peeps or Reese’s eggs? Now’s your chance to find out.

A new map from product review website Influenster uses the site’s review data to discover which seasonal Easter candy is the most “buzzed-about” in each state. This doesn’t necessarily equate to the most popular candy in each state, just the one with the most reviews — meaning the states that went Peeps could have done so because people really, really hate them. (If they have souls, that is. Peeps are bad.)

Anyway, here’s the map. If you want to chat about foil-wrapped chocolate bunnies, please head to South Dakota as soon as possible. Read more…

Google adds a wheelchair-accessible option for transit maps

Google Maps has a pretty solid set of data for taking transit from here to there, but anyone with a physical disability knows it isn’t quite that simple. Some stations may be wheelchair-unfriendly, have out-of-service elevators, that kind of thing. A new update to the service adds an option for you to specify a wheelchair-accessible route — though that’s just a start on what’s really needed.
