Why there’s so much hype about Facebook and cryptocurrency

TwitterFacebook

Facebook may soon begin exploring uses for cryptocurrency technology.

The company’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted his annual personal memo on Thursday — mostly about being a better CEO — but one throwaway reference to cryptocurrency technology captured much of the media’s attention.

Writing about how the last year saw many people lose trust in social media and tech companies, Zuckerberg noted the growing importance of de-centralizing forces, like the rise of cryptocurrency.

The time has come for Mark Zuckerberg to reveal his 2018 personal challenge

TwitterFacebook

Mark Zuckerberg is using 2018 as even further incentive to fix the hot mess that is Facebook.

On Thursday Zuck announced — via Facebook of course — his annual “personal challenge.” It’s a tradition he started in 2009 in which he kicks off each new year by committing to learning something new.

Over the years, he says, he’s visited every state in the U.S., run 365 miles, built an AI for his own house, read 25 books, and even learned Mandarin. But in 2018 the Facebook CEO will work toward fixing important issues on the social media platform.

Good.

TwitterFacebook

Congress passed a stopgap measure on Thursday that will prevent a government shutdown, at least until January. But FWD.us, the organization founded by such tech titans as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, isn’t happy about one thing the spending bill is missing: protection for Dreamers.

Democratic leaders wanted an extension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program — which protects undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as young children — in the bill. That didn’t happen, but the legislation passed anyway, funding the government until Jan. 19.  Read more…
