Facebook’s ‘Trust Indicators’ is another small, small step in its fake news battle

TwitterFacebook

Facebook wants you to know what’s fake news and what’s not (supposedly) so it’s released another tool called “Trust Indicators.”

It’s a fancy name, but it’s actually a small move hidden within a little feature. The tiny “i” icon next to articles on News Feed will now include more information about the media outlet behind that story. Publishers can choose to share their ethics policy, corrections policy, fact-checking policy, ownership structure, and masthead, according to a Facebook spokesperson.

The hope is that Facebook users will click through and read each of those sections.  Read more…

Mark Zuckerberg’s first big investor meeting included ‘a lot of staring at the desk’

TwitterFacebook

Mark Zuckerberg has grown into a damn fine public speaker, even giving a few talks in Mandarin.

But the Facebook CEO wasn’t always like that. In fact, Zuckerberg was almost famously awkward in person.

Reid Hoffman, CEO of LinkedIn and a Silicon Valley veteran, recently recounted just how painfully quiet Zuck could be—even during important moments.

During a recent podcast, Hoffman touched on Zuckerberg’s first big meeting with him and Peter Thiel, who would go on to make one of the first major investments in Facebook. Read more…

Facebook reveals more info on its plan to stop revenge porn using your nudes

TwitterFacebook

Facebook wants your nude photos.

We’re not kidding. It’s part of an effort by the social network to prevent revenge porn from spreading via its network. But the idea of sending nude photos to one of the world’s most profitable companies frightened people.

Facebook asks people to send them their nudes so they can prevent them from being posted as revenge porn. Nothing will go wrong with this planhttps://t.co/ftQbQji4YD

— Eva (@evacide) November 8, 2017

On Thursday, Facebook further clarified how the program works via a blog post titled “The Facts: Non-Consensual Intimate Image Pilot” and published by Facebook’s Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis.  Read more…

Facebook is launching a 30-city tour to connect with small businesses

TwitterFacebook

Mark Zuckerberg will no longer be the only Facebook employee touring America.

Facebook is launching a 30-stop U.S. tour in 2018 to educate small business owners on how to use the product, Zuckerberg announced Thursday while visiting St. Louis. Called Facebook Community Boost, the program will include IRL training on how to get started or further take advantage of digital tools like Facebook.

For Facebook, the return is obvious. More business owners using Facebook inspires more activity on the site, and business owners can easily become Facebook advertisers. The effort also aligns with Facebook’s new Community mission.  Read more…

Zuck says ad transparency regulation would be ‘very good if it’s done well’

Despite Facebook’s effort to rapidly self-regulate in the wake of Russian interference in the U.S. election using Facebook ads, CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he would support government regulation if implemented properly. Meanwhile, Facebook elevated its expense estimates for 2018 to fund security hiring. Read More

Facebook’s quarterly earnings were amazing. But Mark Zuckerberg isn’t cheering

TwitterFacebook

Facebook just had an incredible past three months for making money, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s tone isn’t that celebratory.

“Our community continues to grow and our business is doing well,” Zuckerberg said in a prepared statement. “But none of that matters if our services are used in ways that don’t bring people closer together.”

“We’re serious about preventing abuse on our platforms. We’re investing so much in security that it will impact our profitability. Protecting our community is more important than maximizing our profits,” the statement. Read more…

People think Facebook is listening to them. Here’s how they’re fighting back.

TwitterFacebook

These days, Facebook seems to know more about you than you do. From eerily accurate “people you may know” suggestions to the creepily perfect ads populating your News Feed, the company undeniably has a Big Brother-like finger on the pulse of its 2 billion monthly active users.

But how does it do this? Could it be, perhaps, that when the boy king behind the half-trillion dollar company isn’t defending himself against charges of subverting democracy, he’s directing his algorithmic minions to listen in on your every conversation so as to better target you with shoe adverts?

Absolutely yes — at least, so goes a long-running theory repeatedly denied by Facebook. But maybe, just maybe, Facebook isn’t being totally honest with us? This seems to be the general consensus of scores of users who believe, despite any and all official proclamations to the contrary, that Facebook eavesdrops on their daily banter.  Read more…
