The future of photography is code
What’s in a camera? A lens, a shutter, a light-sensitive surface, and, increasingly, a set of highly sophisticated algorithms. While the physical components are still improving bit by bit, Google, Samsung, and Apple are increasingly investing in (and showcasing) improvements wrought entirely from code. Computational photography is the only real battleground now. The reason for […]

Marriage proposals are consistently some of life’s most picturesque moments.
On a recent trip to Yosemite National Park in California, professional photographer Matthew Dippel had the pleasure of accidentally witnessing a proposal between two strangers from afar. Naturally, he whipped out his camera and captured a visually spectacular, wildly romantic shot.
In hopes of finding the two people in the photograph, Dippel turned to Twitter for help, sharing the image and a bit of context to aid in the search.
Twitter help, idk who these two are but I hope this finds them. I took this at Taft Point at Yosemite National Park, on October 6th, 2018pic.twitter.com/Rdzy0QqFbY

In a world of screens, it’s easy to forget that we actually live on a lush green planet filled with diverse wildlife.
But the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is here to remind you that nature will forever be more impressive and beautiful than even the most advanced CGI.
This year’s winner is a portrait of two golden snub-nosed monkeys. The photo, entitled “The Golden Couple,” was shot by Dutch photographer Marsel van Oosten in the forest of China’s Qinling Mountains, the only habitat for this endangered species.
The photo was selected because it celebrates “the majestic and otherworldly presence of nature, and reminds us of our crucial role in protecting it,” Natural History Museum Director Sir Michael Dixon said in a press release. Read more…

Soviet camera company Zenit is reborn!
If you’re familiar with 20th century Soviet camera clones you’ll probably be familiar with Zenit. Created by Krasnogorsky Zavod, the Nikon/Leica clones were a fan favorite behind the Iron Curtain and, like the Lomo, was a beloved brand that just doesn’t get its due. The firm stopped making cameras in 2005 but in its long […]

The new iPhones have excellent cameras, to be sure. But it’s always good to verify Apple’s breathless on-stage claims with first-hand reports. We have our own review of the phones and their photography systems, but teardowns provide the invaluable service of letting you see the biggest changes with your own eyes — augmented, of course, by a high-powered microscope.

Photokina is underway in London and the theme of the show is “large.” Unusually for an industry that is trending towards the compact, the cameras on stage at this show sport big sensors, big lenses, and big price tags. But though they may not be for the average shooter, these cameras are impressive pieces of hardware that hint at things to come for the industry as a whole.
