The ‘Pose’ finale gave a happily ever after for those who rarely get a chance to live a fairy tale

TwitterFacebook

In fairy tales, kindness always wins. The good are rewarded, the wicked are justly punished, and the lessons learned by all affirm human values like selflessness and personal growth.

There are hundreds of stories that follow this formula, but very few of them stray from telling them through the lens of straight, white, cisgender, and heterosexual norms, which is why the fairy tale ending of Pose Season 1 felt so profound even as it hit every hackneyed note of a tale as old as time.

Every character on Pose was tested in the finale, and in true fairy tale fashion they emerged from their trials better than they were before. Elektra learned the value of family and forgiveness when her nemesis Blanca rescued her from homelessness, Pray Tell conquered his fear of love by disclosing his HIV status to an understanding potential lover, Angel asserted her worth when she turned a truly useless Stan away for good, Damon made a choice that confirmed his trust in both his boyfriend and his mother’s plans for him, and Blanca’s season-long efforts to do right by her children paid off when she walked away with the Mother of the Year award.  Read more…

‘Pose’ should not bring Evan Peters back for Season 2

TwitterFacebook

In a lot of ways, the penultimate episode of FX’s Pose felt like a finale. Families broke apart, titans fell, new rivals rose, and several relationships between main characters were irrevocably changed in a multitude of ways.

Most saliently, the love story between Stan (Evan Peters) and Angel (Indya Moore) came to what could be a conclusive end, with Stan rejecting Angel’s world and taking back the apartment and furniture he gifted her.

With the actual finale of Pose still to come, and also with the delightful knowledge that Pose has already been renewed for a second season, it’s perhaps the right time to say: Pose shouldn’t bring Stan back, maybe ever.  Read more…

‘Pose’ makes people cry on ‘This Is Us’ levels and that’s lovely

TwitterFacebook

In the world of entertainment, making people cry is in. One of the highest compliments anyone can give a TV show or movie is “I was sobbing by the end,” a recommendation that speaks to the show’s emotional quality and overall worthiness in the media landscape.

The current king of making people weep their sweet, wanted tears is NBC’s This Is Us, a show that is so famous for hurting feelings that people make sure they have tissues on hand before viewing, but summer TV has its own queen of the cry in FX’s Pose.

The ‘Pose’ pilot is a master class in making people care about its characters

TwitterFacebook

Pilots are tricky. Showrunners have settings to explain, conflict to create, and a careful balance to strike between creating a self-contained story that feels satisfying — and leaving a narrative door open for an entire season of television. There are pilots that achieve this, but few do so while introducing an entire cast of characters that the audience genuinely cares about by the end of the episode. Ryan Murphy’s Pose, which premiered on June 3, is a master class in crafting a pilot that takes watchers from “who are these people?” to “I love all of my beautiful sons and daughters and will protect them until my death” in 78 minutes flat.  Read more…
